    A Father’s Devotion

Anne grew up with only her father, Chris, after her mother walked away when she was just five. That memory was etched deeply in her mind — nights filled with arguments and the moment her mother left without looking back. Chris worked multiple jobs to support them before eventually building Harrison Group, the company that later made him successful.

Through it all, Anne admired her father’s strength. He was strict at times, but she knew he carried the scars of betrayal.

    A Note on the Door

One evening, after a long day at work, Anne headed home excited to cook dinner and spend time with her husband, Edward. As she reached her front door, something stopped her. A sticky note was pressed against the wood.

    “Please, call me. Love, Mom.”

Anne froze. Her heart pounded. It had been decades since she last saw her mother. Why now? What could she possibly want? Money? Forgiveness? She knew she wouldn’t have answers unless she made the call. And so, hesitantly, she did.

    A Long-Awaited Meeting

The next day, Anne walked into a restaurant and spotted her mother.

“Hello, darling!” Fiona greeted brightly, her voice too cheerful for the years that had passed.

“Hey… Mom,” Anne replied, the word catching awkwardly in her throat.

“If you’re not comfortable calling me that, you can just say Fiona,” the older woman smiled. “Thank you for coming. I’ve been waiting so long to see you.”

Anne sat down, her eyes sharp. “Let’s get to the point. Why did you call? The last time I saw you, I was five. What do you want?”

“I want to tell you the truth,” Fiona said, folding her hands together. “It was your father’s fault…”

She explained that she had tried to come back years ago, but Chris had pushed her away. Now, with a comfortable life and a wealthy husband, she insisted she wanted nothing more than a relationship with her daughter.

Anne listened, torn. Her mother ordered freely from the menu, even the most expensive wine, and laughed easily as though no years had passed.

    Doubts and Accusations

After lunch, Anne couldn’t shake her mother’s words. If Fiona had been kept away by Chris, then her father had stolen precious years from her. Anger bubbled inside. She drove straight to his house.

“How could you keep her from me all these years, Dad?” she demanded. “That wasn’t your choice to make! She wanted to come back. We wasted so much time!”

Chris looked at her, his face lined with sadness. “She’s lying, Anne. She never wanted to be part of your life.”

Anne’s voice cracked. “No, you’re lying!”

With a deep sigh, Chris led her into his office. “I didn’t want to show you this, but you’re old enough now.”

    The Truth Revealed

On his computer, Chris pulled up old videos. The footage showed Fiona arguing with him years earlier, threatening court battles, demanding money, and leaving only when he paid her. Clip after clip revealed the same pattern.

Anne’s chest tightened. She had wanted so badly to believe her mother.

“But maybe she’s changed now,” Anne whispered, clinging to a thread of hope.

Chris lowered his eyes. “Sweetheart, look at this. It’s from yesterday.”

The screen showed Fiona again, wearing the same clothes Anne had seen her in. She demanded money before walking away.

Anne covered her face with her hands as tears fell. “Why would you keep paying her?”

“I didn’t want her near you, or Edward. She could destroy everything. I just wanted to protect you,” Chris said gently. His love was written in his eyes.

Anne finally nodded. “No, Dad. This ends here. I’ll handle it myself.”

    A Daughter’s Answer

A few days later, Anne met Fiona again.

“My darling! I’m so glad you called. Have you thought about forgiving me?” Fiona asked sweetly.

“Of course, Mom,” Anne answered with a steady smile. Fiona’s eyes lit up at the word.

This time, Anne insisted on paying. Fiona ordered lobster, caviar, wine — the works. Two hours later, stuffed and satisfied, she excused herself to the bathroom.

Anne called for the check, slipped a note on top, and walked away.

When Fiona returned, her smile faded as she read it:

“I enjoyed lunch. Good luck paying for it.”

    The Final Goodbye

Anne never saw her mother again. Rumors spread that Fiona caused a scene when she couldn’t cover the bill.

Anne, meanwhile, held tighter to the only parent who had never abandoned her — her father.

    Lessons to Remember

    • Parenthood is more than a title — it’s sacrifice, love, and presence.

    • Protecting evidence can guard you against lies and manipulation.

    • Sometimes the family we need is already right beside us.
