    A Gift Before the Ceremony

Iris, 78, was filled with joy that morning. Her daughter, Eliza, 50, was about to marry the man she believed was her soulmate, Daniel. Wanting to honor this union, Iris decided to give Daniel her late husband’s diamond cufflinks before the ceremony began.

But when she tried to catch up with him, her knees aching, Iris noticed Daniel moving quickly toward Melissa, one of the bridesmaids and a close friend. He leaned in and whispered something, then both of them slipped away toward the back of the restaurant. Curious and uneasy, Iris followed quietly and saw them enter the bathroom together.

    Behind the Door

With trembling hands, Iris pushed the door open just a crack. What she saw made her chest tighten.

“I can’t wait any longer, baby,” Daniel murmured, pulling Melissa close.

“Not now,” Melissa whispered with a laugh. “If anyone finds out, we’ll ruin everything.”

Iris pressed against the wall, her heart sinking.

“Just once more before I marry Eliza,” Daniel muttered.

Melissa’s voice turned sharp. “Patience! Just stay married a few months. Imagine the payout when you separate—half her fortune, all those assets. But only if you control yourself now.”

Through the mirror, Iris saw them locked in an embrace. Unable to watch another moment, she hurried away, determined to warn her daughter.

    The Bride’s Song

But when Iris reached the hall, Eliza wasn’t there. Instead, the master of ceremonies announced, “Before we move to the wedding hall, the bride has a surprise for the groom.”

Eliza stepped onto the stage in her gown, holding a microphone. “I know this isn’t traditional,” she began. “But I’ve waited so long to find a man to share my life with, and I want to dedicate this song to him.”

As the band played, Eliza sang a heartfelt ballad that silenced the crowd. When she finished, applause thundered. Daniel ran up and embraced her, and Iris’s heart broke seeing the pure love in her daughter’s eyes.

    A Mother’s Plea

Pushing through the guests, Iris reached Eliza. “Sweetheart, I need to talk to you—about Daniel.”

“About Daniel? Mom, what is it?”

“Honey, I don’t even know how to start. Please, can we talk in private?”

“Mom, Daniel is waiting for me. We’ll talk after the first dance, okay?”

    “Honey, no, please wait—”

Before Iris could finish, Melissa appeared with a bright smile. “Eliza, come on. Daniel is waiting in the ballroom.”

Eliza followed happily, leaving Iris torn. She couldn’t ruin her daughter’s special day—not yet. She would need another way to reveal the truth.

    The Plan

After the wedding, Eliza and Daniel accompanied Iris to the airport. But instead of boarding her flight, Iris called a taxi and returned to Eliza’s house. She was certain Daniel and Melissa would meet once Eliza went to work.

Sure enough, Melissa’s silver car sat in the driveway. Iris touched the hood—still warm. She called her daughter at once.

“Honey, my flight was canceled. I’m not feeling well and came back to your house. Can you meet me here?”

“Oh, Mom, I’m busy. Let me call Daniel to help—”

“No! Please, I just need you.”

Eliza sighed. “Fine, I’ll be there soon.”

Peeking through the window, Iris saw Daniel and Melissa inside, kissing on the sofa. She stepped back in disgust, praying her daughter would arrive quickly.

    Caught in the Act

Minutes later, Eliza rushed up. “Mom, are you okay?”

“No, sweetheart. Your husband and Melissa… they’re inside. Together.”

    “What?” Eliza froze.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you earlier. I saw them on your wedding day, but I couldn’t bring myself to ruin it. They’re not just close—they’re planning to take your money.”

Eliza’s hands shook. “Melissa? She’s been my friend for years…”

“They’re inside right now,” Iris urged. “If you don’t believe me, see for yourself.”

Eliza dried her tears and stormed into the house. Iris followed close behind. The sound of laughter drifted from the living room.

“What’s going on here?” Eliza demanded.

Daniel and Melissa sat calmly on the sofa, pretending to chat. Daniel smiled innocently. “Melissa and I were just discussing a project. Didn’t I say I’d be working from home this week?”

“You liar!” Iris shouted. “I saw you two together!”

Melissa frowned. “Iris, really? Do you think Daniel and I are… involved?”

Eliza wavered, torn between her mother’s words and Daniel’s calm demeanor.

    A D@ngerous Game

Daniel took Eliza’s hand. “I love you. And I can prove it.” He pulled a set of keys from his pocket. “See these? I bought us a house. Melissa helped plan the surprise. But now, it’s ruined.”

Eliza’s breath caught. “You bought a house?”

“Yes. I wanted to show you tomorrow. But maybe I shouldn’t bother—if you don’t trust me.”

Eliza clung to him. “No! I trust you. Please don’t leave me.”

Iris’s heart pounded with frustration. “Eliza, don’t fall for this. He’s twisting everything!”

But Eliza only hugged Daniel tighter. Melissa smirked at Iris. “Why can’t you let your daughter be happy?”

The stress overwhelmed Iris. Her knees buckled, and darkness closed in. The last sound she heard was the wail of ambulance sirens.

    A Mother’s Last Stand

At the hospital, doctors told Eliza her mother had suffered a heart attack. Eliza clung to Iris’s hand. “Mom, you scared me. I’m so glad you’re still with me.”

“I’ll only feel better if you let go of that man,” Iris whispered. “He’s using you.”

“Mom, stop. He loves me. Why would he want me to stay if it was only about money?”

“Check your prenup, Eliza. He only wants your fortune.”

Eliza shook her head. “Enough, Mom. Please.”

Realizing she could no longer convince her daughter, Iris made a bold choice. She called her lawyer and changed her will, leaving her estate to charity.

“What? You can’t be serious!” Eliza gasped.

“I won’t let our family’s hard-earned money end up in the wrong hands,” Iris said firmly.

“Fine!” Eliza cried. “If that’s what you want, you don’t have a daughter anymore.”

    The Truth Revealed

Weeks passed. Iris underwent heart surgery and returned home to an empty house. She called and texted Eliza daily, but her daughter never responded.

Then one evening, the doorbell rang. Iris opened the door and froze.

“Eliza?” she whispered, tears welling in her eyes.

Her daughter stood there, face swollen from crying. Iris pulled her inside, wrapping her in a trembling embrace.

“You were right, Mom,” Eliza sobbed. “I should have listened. Daniel wasn’t the man I thought he was.”

Iris stroked her daughter’s hair, her heart aching but also relieved. At last, Eliza was free from the man who had only wanted her for selfish reasons.
