    A Simple Errand

I had only intended to stop by the flower shop for a few minutes. My plan was simple: pick up a bouquet for my wife and another for my daughter. The shop was filled with the fragrance of roses, lilies, and orchids, and I was already holding a carefully wrapped bouquet when something at the entrance caught my attention.

    The Unexpected Presence

An elderly man stood quietly just inside the door. His coat was old but pressed, his trousers bore a sharp crease, and his shoes, though worn, were neatly polished. Beneath his coat was a plain white shirt, buttoned properly to the collar.
He did not look like someone lost or abandoned by life. He looked like someone who had very little, but carried himself with remarkable care and dignity.

    The Harsh Reception

Before he could even take a step further, a young saleswoman approached him. Without offering a smile or even eye contact, she said sharply:
    — “What are you doing here, old man? You’re in the way of our customers.”
Her voice cut through the calm air of the shop, and several people, including me, turned to look.

The old man lowered his gaze slightly and replied softly, almost apologetically:
    — “Excuse me, miss… Could you please tell me how much a branch of mimosa costs?”

    The Price of Kindness

The saleswoman sighed with irritation, as if his presence alone was a burden.
    — “Seriously? You don’t look like you can afford anything here. Why are you even asking?”

The man reached slowly into his pocket and pulled out three crumpled bills. With trembling fingers, he unfolded them—thirty euros in total. His voice was quiet, hesitant:
    — “Perhaps… perhaps there is something I can buy with this?”

    The Cruel Gesture

The saleswoman glanced at the money, smirked, and without a word went to a basket in the corner. She pulled out a branch of mimosa that was already wilted—its stem bent, its blossoms dull.
She thrust it toward him with a mocking smile.
    — “Here. Take this. That’s all your money is worth. Now move along.”

    A Tear That Spoke Volumes

The old man accepted the broken branch gently, as though it were fragile crystal. He tried to straighten it with careful fingers. For a moment, his face remained calm, but then I saw it—one silent tear sliding down his cheek.
On his expression I read not anger, not shame, but something far heavier: a quiet despair that seemed to carry years of struggle.

    A Lesson to Be Taught

I could no longer remain silent. I stepped forward, placed my bouquets on the counter, and looked the saleswoman directly in the eye.
“Wrap your finest mimosa bouquet,” I said firmly. “The most beautiful one you have in this store.”

    She blinked, confused. “For you?”
“No,” I replied, pointing gently to the old man. “For him.”

The shop fell silent. Customers who had been pretending not to watch were now openly staring. The saleswoman hesitated, her smirk vanishing as she realized the weight of the moment. Reluctantly, she turned and picked the freshest, most radiant mimosa bouquet from the display.

    An Unforgettable Gift

When she returned, I paid for the bouquet and then walked over to the old man. His hands shook as I placed it in his arms.
“For someone who deserves more than a wilted branch,” I said softly.

His eyes filled with tears, but this time, they were not from despair. They were from gratitude, from a lifetime of being overlooked and suddenly being seen.
    He whispered, his voice breaking:
    — “It’s for my late wife. Today… it would have been her birthday. Thank you.”

    The True Bloom

At that moment, the shop seemed different. The flowers smelled sweeter, the silence heavier, the air clearer. The saleswoman lowered her eyes, her cheeks flushed with shame. For the first time, she seemed to understand the cruelty of her earlier actions.

The old man left the store slowly, clutching the bouquet with reverence.
And I realized something important: flowers may wither, but dignity—when honored—blooms forever.
