I Found a Slimy Red Creature in My Yard — And I Was Stunned When I Realized What It Was
It happened one quiet morning. I stepped outside to water the flowers and check if the neighborhood cats had made a mess again. But the moment I opened the gate, a horrible smell hit me. It was so strong that my chest tightened, and I could almost taste metal in my mouth.
I took a few steps forward — and froze. Something was moving near the flower bed. 🫣
In front of me lay a slimy, reddish thing, almost inside out. The smell was unbearable — like something rotten hidden nearby. I jumped back, my heart racing, my thoughts spinning wildly.
“What is that? A giant bug? Some strange animal? Something from another world?” I couldn’t tell. 😲
I pulled out my phone, took a picture, and, holding my breath, searched online for answers.
When I typed in “red slimy thing with awful smell,” the first result made my stomach drop. I couldn’t believe what I was reading. 😨😱

“Clathrus archeri — the Alien Fungus Known as Devil’s Fingers.”
It turns out this thing is real. It originally came from Australia and Tasmania but has now spread across the world.
At first, it looks like a white egg — but soon, bright red tentacle-like arms burst out of it, shaped like claws or fingers.
These arms are covered in sticky slime and release a terrible smell to attract flies, which help spread its spores.
People who see it for the first time often think they’ve found something from a horror movie. Some even call the authorities, thinking it’s something dangerous.
But it’s not a creature at all — it’s just a very unusual fungus. Strange, fascinating, and maybe one of the eeriest wonders of nature.
Now, I avoid that part of the yard altogether. I don’t water the flowers there anymore.
Let it grow — nature’s own “mystery gift” is better left undisturbed.
