The Invisible Guard of Ayala Avenue
At 7:00 a.m. on Ayala Avenue, Makati, the Golden Horizon Tower glistens in the sunlight. It is one of the tallest and most prestigious buildings in the business district. At the entrance to the building, Lita stood ready for duty. She was a 58-year-old veteran of hard work, now dressed in a crisp guard uniform with shiny combat boots and a radio on her waistband. On this day, however, Lita was more anxious than usual. She kept a tight grip on her hat.
“Lita, are you alright?” another guard asked. “You look stunned. Sir Marco will be coming soon—the new CEO. We need to be vigilant.”
Lita just nodded. “I’m fine.”
In fact, she felt a surge of conflicting emotions. Marco—the new CEO visiting today for a critical Board Meeting—was her son. No one in the building knew their relationship. Lita had spent her life as a street sweeper and a laundrywoman, raising Marco on her own. She had worked three shifts to send him to a top university. Now that Marco was successful, Lita didn’t want to tarnish his image.
“It would be a shame if they found out the CEO’s mom was just a lowly guard,” Lita muttered to herself. “He might be laughed at. The employees might think less of him if they knew he came from such a low-income family.”
The Arrival of the CEO
Soon after, the convoy arrived. WANG-WANG! The sirens cleared the path. Bodyguards stepped out first, followed by a black luxury car that stopped across the lobby. The door opened and Marco walked out. He looked authoritative in his tailored suit, surrounded by assistants and executives clutching folders.
Everyone was in awe. “Good morning, sir!” greeted the receptionists and guards. Marco acknowledged them warmly. Mother Lita, instead of saluting with a raised forehead, bowed her head. She pulled her hat down to cover her face and stepped back behind a large pillar. She wanted to be invisible. She didn’t want her son to see her in her uniform.
Marco walked in. The sound of his expensive shoes echoed through the marble lobby. CLICK… CLICK… CLICK… Lita took a deep breath. “Thank you. He didn’t see me. His dignity is safe.”
Suddenly, however, the footsteps stopped. The entire lobby fell silent. Marco turned around. He had caught sight of a familiar figure hiding behind a pillar, crouching and trying to obscure her face. Marco veered out of his path. He left the executives waiting by the elevator and walked back toward the entrance. He stopped directly in front of Lita.
A Hug in the Lobby
“Mom?” Marco called out.
The surrounding employees were stunned. “Mom?” they whispered. “Who is he talking to?”
Lita slowly lifted her face, shuddering. “S-Sir Marco…” she stammered, trying to maintain professional distance. “Good morning, sir.”
Marco took off his expensive sunglasses. He looked at his mother—at the sweat on her forehead, the wrinkles around her eyes, and the uniform she wore. Instead of getting upset or walking away, Marco suddenly pulled his mother into a tight embrace. The CEO embraced the lady guard in the middle of the Makati lobby.
“Mom, why are you hiding?” Marco asked, not bothering to look at the hundreds of staring eyes.
“It’s a shame for you, son,” Lita whispered as she burst into tears. “You’re the CEO. I’m just a guard. I didn’t want you to be embarrassed in front of your people.”
Marco pulled back and looked his mother in the eye. He grabbed her hand—the hand that was rough from decades of labor. “Come with me,” Marco commanded.
“But where? I am not allowed to leave my post!”
“I am the owner of this building. Come along.”
The Guest of Honor
Marco took his mother to the elevator. They went up to the Penthouse where the Board of Directors was waiting. When they entered the boardroom, the billionaire investors and shareholders were confused. They saw their leader walking in with a security guard.
“Gentlemen,” Marco began as he escorted Lita to the head of the table. “Before we get started, I’d like to introduce you to my VIP today.” Marco stood tall beside his mother.
“Do you see this woman? She is the reason I am standing in front of you today. When I was a kid, she would sweep the streets while I read my books. She washed other people’s clothes so I could buy a school uniform. And now, even in her old age, she chose to be a Security Guard so she wouldn’t have to rely on me.”
The room was pin-drop silent. A few directors were moved to tears.
“She tried to hide in the lobby earlier because she said she didn’t want to embarrass me,” Marco said with a soft chuckle. “But I want everyone to know: the uniform she’s wearing is the most luxurious dress I’ve ever seen. It is more respectable than any suit we are wearing.” Marco looked at his mother and said, “Mom, you are the real leader of my life. Without your sacrifice, there would be no Marco the CEO today.”
A Higher Level of Respect
The board members broke into applause. They stood up one by one and shook hands with Lita respectfully. From then on, Lita never hid her face again. And every employee who walked through that lobby didn’t just say hello to Marco; they offered a higher level of respect and a sharp salute to the Lady Guard at the door—the mother who had been the secret weapon behind her son’s success.
