    PART 1

The clock read 7:45 p.m. when Arturo Montes de Oca had just stepped out of his armored SUV.

Flashing red and blue lights struck him head-on in the darkness, blinking like an ominous warning on the facade of his imposing mansion in Jardines del Pedregal, one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Mexico City.

He froze at the foot of the entrance. In one hand he still clutched his Italian leather briefcase, and in the other, the suit jacket he planned to wear to a dinner with investors that same evening.

The atmosphere was tense, heavy. A Mexico City police patrol car was parked blocking the enormous wrought-iron gate.

Facing the main sidewalk, two police officers stood with stern expressions. And right between them, her hands tightly cuffed, was a woman whom Arturo recognized with absolute clarity in just three seconds.

    It was Lupita.

The nanny who had cared for their twin sons for the past two years. The same woman who woke up at 4:30 every morning to embark on a long and exhausting commute by public transport from Valle de Chalco to the south of the city.

The woman who made them mild chilaquiles, folded their tiny clothes with infinite care, healed their scraped knees with kisses, and somehow, inexplicably, kept that enormous marble house running smoothly with a warmth that no one else in the family possessed.

Now, Lupita was trembling in the cold light of the porch. Her wrists were shackled in front of her, her gray uniform was wrinkled, and her signature braid had come undone, letting her dark hair fall over a tear-streaked face.

She didn’t have the evasive look of a guilty person. She looked completely broken, crushed under the weight of an injustice too great to process.

Clinging to Lupita’s legs, crying with a heartbreaking despair, were Leo and Santi, Arturo’s two 4-year-old sons.

Leo was sobbing so hard his small body was trembling uncontrollably, his face buried in the nanny’s apron.

Santi, who was usually the quieter of the two, was beside himself, screaming with heart-wrenching rage.

“Don’t take her away!” the 4-year-old boy shouted, hitting one of the police officers’ legs with his small fists. “My Lupita didn’t do anything! She’s good! She’s good!”

Arturo dropped the expensive briefcase onto the pavement.

“What the hell is going on here?” he demanded in a thunderous voice as he strode forward.

One of the officers turned towards him, maintaining a stern, professional expression.

—Are you Mr. Montes de Oca?

    —Yes, it’s me.

—His wife filed a formal complaint two hours ago. This woman is accused of stealing jewelry valued at over 300,000 pesos from the master bedroom. We have direct orders to transfer her to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Arturo stared into space. For a second, the policeman’s words simply made no sense to him. Steal? Lupita? The woman who in two years had never asked for a single extra peso?

The woman who brought her own food in plastic containers from home so as not to touch the family’s pantry? It was utter madness.

Then he looked up towards the main entrance.

Isabella stood at the top of the steps. His wife.

She was wearing an elegant silk robe that probably cost more than Lupita’s entire year’s salary. Her blonde hair looked perfectly salon-styled. Her acrylic nails were flawless.

There wasn’t a single detail out of place about her. But the most disturbing thing of all was that there wasn’t a single sign of panic, sadness, or empathy on her face.

She watched the scene of her two children screaming in emotional pain as if she were watching a boring television program.

What chilled Arthur’s blood at that moment was that Isabella seemed strangely satisfied. There was an almost imperceptible curve at the corner of her lips.

—Isabella—Arturo said, his voice growing colder with each passing second—. What is this circus all about?

She crossed her arms and sighed with obvious annoyance.

“It’s simply what had to happen,” she replied arrogantly. “I told you 100 times that that cat wasn’t to be trusted.

My diamond choker, my earrings, and a gold bracelet magically disappeared from my drawer. She’s the only person who comes into our room.”

At that critical moment, Lupita raised her head. The cold metal handcuffs were already leaving painful red marks on her brown skin.

“I didn’t steal a single thing from you, Mr. Arturo,” said the nanny, her voice breaking but full of unwavering dignity. “I swear on my saintly mother’s memory. I never take what doesn’t belong to me.”

The two officers began to move roughly, pulling the woman toward the patrol car door. That’s when the two children completely broke down in a panic attack.

They had to physically pry Leo off Lupita’s leg, while the boy screamed so intensely that he was breathless for three seconds.

Arturo scooped his two children into his arms as the police car door slammed shut. He felt the children’s tears soaking his designer shirt.

And as the patrol car’s taillights disappeared into the distance, a sickening feeling settled in Arturo’s stomach. None of this made sense. There was a macabre detail hidden beneath his wife’s cold demeanor.

It was absolutely impossible to believe the nightmare that was about to unfold when he discovered the truth…

    PART 2

The silence in the enormous house was suffocating. After spending almost two hours trying to calm his two children, listening to Santi cry himself to sleep begging for the return of his beloved Lupita, Arturo walked purposefully to his private office on the ground floor.

He locked the door, sat down at his mahogany desk, and turned on the monitors of the security system that controlled the 16 cameras on the property.

At first, his only intention was to find one piece of solid evidence to prove the nanny’s innocence.

What he never imagined was that those recordings would uncover a truth so twisted and dark that, by the next morning, he wouldn’t know if the biggest monster in his home was an imaginary thief or the woman he slept with every night.

Arturo rewound the recordings to 7:00 a.m. There was Lupita, arriving on time. She greeted the guard, left her old backpack in the kitchen, and began preparing breakfast for the two children.

The screen showed hours and hours of normal routine. At 11:30 a.m., Lupita was seen playing with the twins in the garden. At 1:00 p.m., she was feeding them. At no point in the last eight hours had the nanny even approached the hallway outside the master bedroom.

Arturo frowned. He switched to the camera in the upper hallway.

At 1:42 p.m., something broke the routine. The screen showed Isabella. His wife entered the master bedroom alone and closed the door.

Exactly five minutes passed. When Isabella re-entered the hallway, Arturo felt a brutal blow to his chest. He immediately paused the image. He zoomed in on the screen.

There was no doubt. In her hands, Isabella carried a small, distinctive black velvet box. It was the exact same case where she kept the 300,000 pesos worth of jewelry that had supposedly been stolen.

“It can’t be true…” Arturo whispered, feeling like he couldn’t breathe.

She played the video again. Isabella walked down the hallway with chilling calm. She didn’t look back even once.

She headed toward the north wing of the house, where the service staircase was located, and went down to the basement, an area that no one used except to store old furniture.

Arturo switched to the basement camera. At 1:48 p.m., Isabella entered the storage room. She remained inside for four minutes.

When she returned to the hallway, her hands were completely empty. She had hidden her own jewelry.

Arturo’s pulse pounded in his temples. But the horror was far from over. The system clock kept ticking. At 3:10 p.m., Lupita appeared upstairs for the first time.

She approached the master bedroom door, knocked softly twice, and when she received no answer, turned around and went back downstairs. She never turned the doorknob. She never entered.

There was no robbery. It was all a sick charade.

But why? Arturo fast-forwarded the recordings to 5:26 p.m. Isabella reappeared in the living room. She was alone, holding her cell phone to her ear.

Arturo turned the audio volume all the way up. The quality wasn’t perfect, but the words echoed like knives in the silent office.

—Yes, Mom, it’s done—Isabella said with a mocking, frivolous laugh. —The police are on their way. By tomorrow morning that cat won’t be here anymore.

There was a brief silence while she listened to the other person. Then, Isabella uttered a phrase that destroyed the marriage forever.

“Please, the children will get used to it quickly. They’ll cry for two or three days and then it’ll pass.

No one, much less some mere employee from Chalco, is going to steal my place as their mother in my own home. The twins prefer her, and I won’t tolerate that. I’ll destroy her if necessary.”

Arturo turned off the monitor. He didn’t need to listen for another second. The level of evil was absolute.

His wife had framed an innocent woman, sending her to prison and traumatizing their own two children, all because of a fit of jealousy and extreme vanity.

At 8:00 a.m. the next day, the house was shrouded in a de:athly silence. Isabella came downstairs looking impeccable, as usual.

“Good morning,” she said, pouring herself a cup of espresso. “I expect you to take care of the legal paperwork with the lawyers today. I don’t want the scandal about the thieving nanny to reach the ears of my friends at the club.”

Arturo, who hadn’t slept a single minute, was standing next to the marble bar in the kitchen.

—I’ve already taken care of everything —he replied in a sepulchral voice.

    Isabella smiled slightly.

—I knew you’d sort it out quickly, my love.

Then he slowly turned and looked her in the eyes. He no longer looked at her as his wife of the last six years, but as an unknown monster.

—Lupita will be released in 1 hour —Arturo said.

The coffee cup trembled in Isabella’s hand. Her smile vanished instantly.

    —What nonsense are you saying?

—And you, in exactly 2 hours, will be formally notified. I filed a complaint against you with the Public Prosecutor’s Office for making false statements, fabricating evidence, and causing moral damage.

The silence that fell over the kitchen was devastating.

“You’re crazy. You have no proof of anything,” she hissed, clenching her fists.

Arturo took an electronic tablet and slid it onto the bar in front of her. The security video began playing automatically. The footage showed Isabella hiding the velvet box. Then, the audio of her phone call filled the room.

Isabella’s face went from astonishment to humiliation in just 10 seconds. She tried to stammer out an excuse.

—Arturo, I… I can explain this. That woman was stealing the affection of my own children. They ignored me to go off with her.

“You acted like an iceberg with them from the day they were born,” he interrupted with disgust. “Lupita gave them the love you denied them because you were busy traveling and shopping.

And instead of trying to be a better mother, you chose to destroy the life of an innocent person. I demand a divorce today. And you leave this house now.”

That same afternoon, outside the holding cells of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Lupita crossed through the glass door.

She was exhausted, with swollen eyes and a deep fear in her heart. She thought she was completely alone in the world.

But when she looked up, she saw Arturo standing on the sidewalk. And next to him, running as fast as they could, were Leo and Santi.

—Lupita! Lupita! —the two children shouted in unison.

The woman fell to her knees on the dirty concrete and received the impact of the 2 little ones, hugging them with such immense love that it made passersby cry.

“Forgive me,” Arturo said, approaching her respectfully.

“This should never have happened. I’ll make you pay for every tear you shed today.”

Four weeks passed. The truth exploded in social circles. Isabella’s name was dragged through the mud, her friends turned their backs on her, and she lost full custody of her children in a swift trial.

She ended up living alone in a small apartment, drowning in her own poison.

Arturo managed to restore peace to his home. Lupita returned home, not only with a substantial raise, but also occupying the place of respect and authority she always deserved.

That family wasn’t destroyed by a robbery; it was nearly destroyed by envy. But in the end, loyalty and genuine love proved to be worth a million times more than any jewel in the world
