The Cat Woke Her Owner Every Night and Drove Her Out of the Bedroom: The Woman Thought the Cat Had Mental Problems Until She Took Her to the Vet đ˘đ˛
Iâm a veterinarian, and I often receive calls in the middle of the night. People seem convinced that if you have a diploma, you’re responsible for solving everythingâfrom a dogâs sneeze to saving someone’s life. But Anna called during the day. And there was such exhaustion in her voice that it sounded as though she hadnât slept properly for months.
âHello, is this the clinic? My name is Anna. I have an appointment with you. I have a problem with my cat⌠She wonât let me sleep.â
The phrase âmy cat wonât let me sleepâ can mean almost anything. But there was no irritation in her voiceâonly concern.
Anna arrived neatly dressed, though slightly tense. She looked about fifty-five years old, with a strict haircut and a coat that matched her boots. She carried the pet carrier carefully, as if it contained fragile porcelain.
âThis is Luna,â she said. âMy husband chose her name. Itâs beautiful. But at night, sheâs not Lunaâsheâs an alarm clock with claws.â
Large eyes stared at me from inside the carrier. A big gray cat with thick fur and a calm expression. No sign of aggression.
âWhatâs happening?â I asked.
Anna took a deep breath.
âShe wakes me up every night. Always around three or four in the morning. First, she gently taps my cheek with her paw. If I donât react, she starts hitting harder. Sometimes she bites my hand. She pulls off my blanket. She wonât stop until I get up and go sleep on the couch in the living room. And as soon as I leave, she curls up on my pillow and sleeps there until morning.â
âHow long has this been going on?â
âAbout three months. At first, I thought she had developed a bad attitude. Then I decided maybe the problem was my nerves. My doctor said it was stress-related insomnia and prescribed a sedative. But it didnât help.â
Luna sat calmly beside her owner, never taking her eyes off her. I examined the cat. Her heartbeat was steady, her breathing was clear, and her weight was normal. An absolutely healthy animal.
And at that moment, I suddenly realized with horror that the cat had no psychological problems at allâand that something far more frightening might be happening. đ˘đŤŁ
âAnna,â I asked, âwhen she wakes you up, how do you feel?â
She paused to think.
âNot good. My heart races. My mouth is dry. Sometimes it feels like I canât get enough air. At first, I assume itâs my blood pressure acting up. I put a pill under my tongue and move to the couch. After a while, I start feeling better.â
âHas anyone ever told you that you snore?â
She looked embarrassed.
âA neighbor once told me that at night I seem to stop breathing, and then suddenly gasp for air.â
I looked at the cat. She still hadnât taken her eyes off Anna.
âI donât think Luna is waking you up because sheâs being difficult,â I said. âItâs possible sheâs reacting to whatâs happening to you while you sleep. Animals can sense changes in breathing or when a heartbeat becomes unusual. To her, that may be a warning signal.â
Anna stared at me as though I had said something unbelievable.
âAre you saying sheâs saving me?â
âI canât prove it,â I replied. âBut Iâm certain the problem isnât the cat. You need medical tests. Blood work, blood sugar levels, a heart examination, and possibly a sleep study. Start there.â
She was silent for a long time, then nodded.
A week later, Anna called again. The dull exhaustion was gone from her voice.
âI had the tests done,â she said. âMy blood sugar is elevated. And my doctor referred me to a cardiologist. They found heart problems. They also said I have episodes where I stop breathing during the night. Iâve been sent for further testing. The doctor said itâs serious.â
She paused before quietly adding:
âIf Luna hadnât woken me up, I would have kept blaming everything on stress.â
Anna is now receiving treatment. Her doctors have prescribed medication and sleep therapy. Sheâs sleeping much better now. Luna still comes to her at night, but these days she simply lies beside her and purrs softly.
