At seventy-one, I finally took the cruise I had spent decades dreaming about—and somehow found myself falling for the charming widower seated at the next table.

On the final night, however, I followed him below deck and found my suitcase sitting outside a cabin that wasn’t mine.

I had expected ocean views, peaceful dinners, and a quiet escape.

    I had not expected Richard.

He was seventy-four, widowed, funny, and effortlessly charming.

The first evening, he sat at the table beside mine.

By the third morning, we were sharing breakfast.

By the sixth day, I felt something I hadn’t allowed myself to feel since my husband died.

    Hope.

On our last evening aboard, Richard ordered champagne.

“To unexpected second chances,” he said, lifting his glass.

    I smiled.

    Then his phone buzzed.

The moment he looked at the screen, his expression changed.

    “I’ll be right back.”

    He stood and walked away.

Something about the sudden tension in his face bothered me.

So when I saw him disappear through a staircase marked for crew access only, curiosity got the better of me.

    I followed.

Richard went below deck and disappeared around a corner.

That was when I saw it.

    My suitcase.

It was sitting outside Cabin 018.

    I stopped cold.

Only an hour earlier, that suitcase had been locked inside my own cabin.

    I hurried toward it.

The luggage tag was still attached.

    My name.

    My cabin number.

    Everything.

    “Richard?”

    No answer.

I reached for the cabin door.

    It opened.

    The room inside was dark.

Then I saw something lying across the bed.

    My red scarf.

Beside it was a stack of photographs.

    Dozens of them.

    Photographs of me.

    Walking onto the ship.

    Eating breakfast.

    Standing alone on my balcony.

Some of the pictures had clearly been taken before Richard and I had even introduced ourselves.

    My hands began trembling.

    Then footsteps sounded behind me.

    I turned.

Richard was standing in the doorway.

    His face had gone pale.

“You’re not supposed to be here.”

    I pointed toward the photographs.

    “What is this?”

Before he could answer, an alarm suddenly echoed through the ship.

Richard stepped forward and grabbed my arm.

“We have to leave. Right now.”

    I pulled free.

    “No.”

    I stared directly at him.

“First, you’re going to tell me exactly what is happening.”
