    PART 3:

“Michael, stop the car right now! Pull over!”

Ashley’s piercing voice cut through the sealed silence inside the black SUV like steel scraping over glass. Michael slammed on the brakes before he even knew what had caught her attention. The tires shrieked across the cracked roadside, while a cloud of warm brown dust billowed around the vehicle.

“Look over there,” Ashley said, leaning across the dashboard with the polished smile he had once mistaken for self-confidence. “Isn’t that your ex-wife?”

    Michael turned to look.

    Everything inside him suddenly froze.

A few yards from the edge of the road, beneath the harsh white sunlight of a blazing summer afternoon, stood Emily.

She was no longer the woman he remembered strolling beside him through luxury hotel lobbies and charity galas.

No longer the wife who always left half a cup of coffee on the kitchen island because she was rushing off to help someone in need.

The woman standing by the roadside wore a faded T-shirt, weathered sandals, and jeans coated with gray dust.

Her hair had been tied back carelessly, sweat clung to her temples, and exhaustion had settled across her face as though it belonged there forever.

Yet none of that was what made Michael’s hands begin trembling on the steering wheel.

Emily was carrying two infants against her chest in soft fabric slings.

    Twins.

    Newborns, or nearly so.

Their tiny faces rested beneath knitted caps, their cheeks pink from the relentless heat. Even from inside the SUV, Michael noticed the one detail that struck him like a punch beneath the ribs.

    They had his light-colored hair.

Beside Emily rested a plastic grocery bag half-filled with flattened cans and empty bottles. His former wife—the woman he had once vowed to protect until his dying day—was surviving by collecting recyclables along a lonely country road while carrying two children whose existence he had never even known.

“Well, look at you, Emily,” Ashley called through the open window, her voice carrying the same sweetness as poison. “Digging through garbage. I guess everyone ends up exactly where they belong.”

    Emily never answered.

She did not even glance at Ashley.

She looked only at Michael, and the quiet sorrow in her eyes made every breath feel pa!nfully heavy.

“Drive,” Ashley snapped. “Don’t let this dis@ster get anywhere near us. And those babies? Please. They’re probably from one of your little side stories, aren’t they, Emily?”

The words’ side stories unlocked a memory Michael had spent an entire year trying to bury.

A year before, he had stood inside the marble foyer of the home he and Emily had once shared.

Bank transfer records lay spread across the glass table.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars had supposedly been transferred by Emily.

Grainy photographs showed her entering a hotel beside a man Michael had never seen before.

Then came the final blow: his mother’s diamond necklace had v@nished from the safe and was later discovered inside Emily’s dresser after Ashley suggested the security team search her closet.

Emily had fallen to her knees that night.

“Michael, I didn’t do this,” she begged. “Ashley hates me. She’s lying to you. Please, listen to me. I’m—”

He never gave her the chance to finish.

Pride has a way of making a man believe he is powerful while quietly turning him into a fool. And hum!liation always seems to crave an audience.

He turned his back, his jaw clenched, his heart consumed by the need to make someone pay.

“Get her out of my house,” he ordered the security guards. “And don’t let her leave with a single dime.”

He never listened to the rest of what she was trying to say.

He never wondered where she had gone.

A car horn blasted behind him, pulling him back to the roadside.

Ashley slipped a wrinkled twenty-dollar bill from her purse, crushed it into a tight ball, and tossed it through the open window.

“Here,” she said. “Go buy some milk. Or whatever people like you spend money on.”

The bill landed in the dusty ground beside Emily’s worn sandals.

Emily stared at it for a brief second. Then she lifted her eyes toward Michael once again.

There was no hatred in them.

    That was the cru:elest part.
