My wife left me and our seven children for a luxurious life with my wealthy best friend. I never tried to get even, not even when she reappeared ten years later. But when she screamed at our youngest daughter for confronting her, I realized I could no longer remain silent.

My name is Daniel. I’m 53, and for the past decade, I’ve raised seven children on my own.

I earned my living restoring furniture. Money was tight, but our children never lacked necessities.

    Vanessa, my ex-wife, wasn’t satisfied.

“That woman’s handbag costs more than our refrigerator,” she complained.

“Then let’s hope it keeps her groceries cold.”

“Everything’s a joke to you, Daniel.”

    “Not everything.”

“Look at Rob. New car, expensive vacations. Why can’t we live like that?”

    “Rob doesn’t have seven children.”

    “There’s always an excuse.”

Rob was my closest friend, someone I trusted enough to give a spare key to our home.

I spent my days repairing damaged furniture, convinced that nearly everything could be restored.

    Eventually, I discovered otherwise.

Ten years earlier, a canceled appointment sent me home unexpectedly.

Hearing voices upstairs, I went to our bedroom and discovered Vanessa with Rob.

    “Daniel!” Rob jumped backward.

    Vanessa hardly reacted.

    “How long?” I demanded.

    “Don’t make a scene.”

“With my best friend? In our bedroom?”

“Maybe you should ask why I needed someone else.”

    “Daniel, buddy…” Rob began.

    “Don’t call me buddy.”

Vanessa crossed her arms. “I deserved a better life, Daniel. Rob understands what I want.

“What about our seven children? Sophie just turned two!”

“I’m tired of changing diapers while you barely pay the bills!”

I learned she’d already vacationed with Rob in the Maldives, claiming she was visiting her sister.

    “So you’re leaving?”

    “Yes.”

    “And the kids?”

    “You’ll manage.”

While she packed her belongings, I made one final attempt.

“Sophie still sleeps holding your sweater.”

    “Then give her another blanket.”

She wasn’t simply ending our marriage. She was walking away from all seven children.

Sophie sobbed through that first night, finally quieting near dawn.

    “Daddy, where’s Mommy?”

“She’s not coming home tonight, sweetheart.”

    “Tomorrow?”

    I had no answer.

Rachel, our eldest, was sixteen. She discovered me sitting on the kitchen floor.

“Dad, are we going to be okay?”

    “Absolutely.”

    “You don’t sound sure.”

“Then I’ll keep saying it until I do.”

I began repairing furniture each morning, stocking supermarket shelves at night, and delivering orders on weekends.

Rachel prepared breakfasts, Nathan assisted with schoolwork, and the other children helped care for Sophie.

One evening, Sophie asked, “Did Mommy leave because I cried too much?”

“Nothing you did made her leave, sweetheart.”

    “Even when I was naughty?”

    “Especially then.”

“Did Mom ask about us?” Rachel asked.

    “Sometimes. I send her pictures.”

    “Does she ever answer?”

    “Not anymore.”

“Why don’t you tell her what you think?”

“Because you’ve already been hurt enough.”

“Dad, you need to move on. Find yourself a girlfriend. You deserve to be happy, too.”

“With seven kids? I’d need to put up a warning sign.”

    “Dad!” Rachel laughed.

“I’m kidding, sweetheart. I’m happy right here with you.”

I did attempt dating occasionally, but most women lost interest after learning I had seven children.

    I never married again.

Instead, I concentrated on earning a living, while the children contributed however they could.

“Dad, I’ll photograph your furniture,” Rachel offered.

“And I’ll build you a website,” Nathan added.

    “Will that bring customers?”

“Only if your chairs stop looking haunted.”

Their efforts worked, and eventually I established my own restoration workshop.

I created handmade gifts for every birthday. When Sophie turned twelve, I restored an antique wooden desk she’d admired for months.

“You’re still worried she won’t like it?” Rachel asked.

“She wanted a tablet, too. I couldn’t afford both.”

“Dad, she’s been talking about that desk for weeks.”

“But a tablet would’ve cost more.”

“So? Since when does the price decide how special a gift is?”

I smiled, realizing Rachel was right.

The next evening, a tablet became the least of our concerns.

Sophie’s birthday barbecue brought all seven children together, along with her classmates and several neighbors.

She shrieked with excitement upon opening her present.

    “DAD! YOU FINISHED IT!”

“Unless you’d prefer another pair of socks.”

She threw her arms around me, nearly knocking me over. “This is better than the tablet!”

“You don’t have to say that.”

“I’m not saying it for you!”

“Can we put it in my room tonight?” Sophie asked.

    “After the party.”

    “Promise?”

    “Promise.”

She grinned. “Then I’ll do my homework at it tomorrow. Even math.”

    “Now that’s a serious compliment.”

    A knock interrupted us.

I answered the door to find Vanessa wearing an expensive cream coat and oversized sunglasses.

Behind her stood Rob, carrying shopping bags. “Daniel! Surprise!”

“How did you know about the party?”

“Rachel posted about it. I thought it was time for a reunion.”

    “After ten years?”

“People change. Besides, everyone loves a good reunion story.”

    “What do you want, Vanessa?”

“To visit my daughter. Surely that’s allowed.”

“You haven’t visited her in ten years.”

“Must we discuss that on her birthday?”

She pushed past me into the house.

“Goodness, you still have the same furniture!”

“Some of us like keeping things.”

    “Rob, bring the presents.”

Sophie emerged from the kitchen holding cake and stopped abruptly.

    “Mom?”

    Vanessa beamed. “Hello, sweetheart!”

My daughter stood speechless before Vanessa awkwardly embraced her.

“Look how beautiful you’ve become! You have my eyes.”

“You haven’t seen me since I was two.”

    “Well, life gets complicated.”

    Sophie noticed the bags.

“Are you staying for my birthday?”

    “Of course, sweetheart!”

    “For the whole party?”

    Vanessa smiled. “We’ll see.”

    Sophie nodded, visibly disappointed.

“Will you come back tomorrow?” Sophie asked.

“Let’s not make plans yet, darling.”

“But you know where we live now.”

    “Of course I do.”

Sophie looked toward me before stepping aside.

Rob carried in a brand-new bicycle, while Vanessa presented Sophie with a wrapped tablet.

    “Thank you,” Sophie whispered.

“See? Mommy knows what you deserve. I can finally give you what your father couldn’t.”

    “Vanessa, enough,” I warned.

Sophie looked toward her restored desk.

    “Dad made that for me.”

“That’s sweet. But now you have something better.”

    “Better?”

    “Something you actually deserve.”

Sophie’s happiness disappeared. She took out her phone.

“Mom, can I show you something I found online?”

I assumed she wanted to share a birthday picture. Instead, she’d uncovered something Vanessa had concealed from us.

“You have hundreds of thousands of followers?” Sophie asked, opening Vanessa’s Instagram.

    “People love my lifestyle, darling.”

“Here you say children ruin women’s freedom.”

    “I was speaking generally.”

“And that avoiding responsibilities keeps you young.”

    “That’s advice for my audience.”

“Do your followers know you have seven children?”

    “My personal life is private.”

“Then why are you livestreaming my birthday?”

Vanessa paused. “I wanted to share our beautiful reunion.”

“Did you tell them you abandoned me?”

    “They don’t need every detail!”

“So you wanted them to think you were a good mom?”

    “Sophie, don’t ruin this!”

Turning around, I spotted Vanessa’s phone positioned against a vase, recording the presents.

A red LIVE indicator shone on its screen.

“You’ve been filming us?” I demanded.

    “It’s for my followers!”

    Sophie grabbed the phone.

    “Then they should meet us.”

    “Sophie, stop!”

“Hi, everyone. I’m Sophie. Mom left when I was two. I have six brothers and sisters.”

    Comments immediately poured in.

    @Hel1n_ko: SEVEN CHILDREN?

@Kozl10v.Lir1: She said she had no responsibilities!

“How dare you, you little brat?!” Vanessa screamed.

After a decade of silence, hearing her attack Sophie pushed me to intervene.

“Get away from her!” I snapped.

“This is why I left! Seven needy children and no freedom!”

    Rob seized Vanessa’s arm.

“My business partners could be watching!”

    “Rob, not now!”

    “You’re ruining my reputation!”

    I switched off the livestream.

    “Leave, Vanessa.”

    “You taught her this!”

“She’s twelve, and you’re furious because she told everyone you abandoned seven children.”

    Rachel appeared behind us.

    “Go, Mom.”

    Vanessa snatched up her purse.

    “You’ll regret this!”

    Rob walked toward the exit.

    “Rob! Say something!”

    He looked back.

“You’ve said enough for both of us.”

I assumed the ordeal had ended.

    Unfortunately, it hadn’t.

Once the guests departed, I discovered Sophie crying beside her new desk.

    “Dad, I ruined everything.”

    “No, sweetheart.”

“I wanted Mom to see what she’d missed. But she acted like everything you gave us was worthless. Then I saw her filming.”

“How long have you known about her account?”

    “Three months.”

    “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“She looked so happy traveling everywhere. Why couldn’t she be happy with us?”

I wrapped my arms around her.

“That was never your responsibility. You shouldn’t have confronted her online, but her words were her choice.”

Sophie played another video showing Vanessa promoting luxury furniture.

    I recognized the manufacturer.

“I restored furniture for that company. I still know their marketing director.”

    “Is that important?”

    “It might be.”

Before I decided whether to contact anyone, Vanessa made an even more damaging mistake.

    Rachel phoned the following morning.

“Dad, have you seen Mom’s new video?”

    “No. What happened?”

“She’s telling everyone you manipulated us into hating her.”

    “What?”

“And that you staged Sophie’s confrontation.”

    “You’re kidding.”

“I wish. She’s even calling Sophie a liar!”

I’d avoided publicly criticizing Vanessa for ten years, hoping to spare our children further pain.

Now, remaining quiet only allowed her accusations to continue.

    Nathan called shortly afterward.

“Are you going to let her say that?”

“No. I’m showing people the truth.”

    “You’re going after Mom?”

“I’m standing up for Sophie. There’s a difference.”

    “Oh, okay…”

“Will you help me make a video?”

“Absolutely. I’ll call Rachel and the others.”

We gathered later to discuss our response.

    “What about Sophie?” Rachel asked.

“She’s staying out of it. She’s been through enough.”

“What if Mom makes another video?” Rachel asked.

    “Then we’ll deal with it.”

“She’s going to blame you again.”

    “Probably.”

    Nathan frowned.

    “Doesn’t that scare you?”

“Of course. But I’m more afraid of disappointing Sophie.”

I searched through family photographs, verified dates, and collected old workshop documents.

That evening, Rachel and Nathan helped organize everything.

“Let’s start with our childhood photos,” Rachel suggested.

“And show how you raised all seven of us,” Nathan added.

“What about the workshop?” I asked.

“Definitely,” Rachel said. “People should see what we built together.”

We chose images from birthdays and school celebrations, alongside photographs of furniture I’d crafted for each child.

Then I sat at Sophie’s desk and began filming.

    Rachel spoke first.

“Dad never told us to hate our mother. He just made sure we knew we were loved.”

    Nathan appeared next.

“We weren’t always comfortable. But we were never unwanted.”

Our other older children contributed their own memories.

I also added security-camera footage capturing Vanessa shouting at Sophie during the party.

Finally, I addressed the camera myself.

“My ex-wife says children steal your best years. Mine gave me a reason to make those years count.”

I made no threats or personal attacks.

The video simply documented ten years of our family life.

I uploaded it the next evening, expecting only a few hundred people to watch.

By breakfast, my phone was ringing constantly.

“Dad!” Rachel shouted. “You’ve passed three hundred thousand!”

    “Views?”

    “What else?”

    Nathan called shortly afterward.

“One of Vanessa’s sponsors just paused her campaign!”

    “Already?”

“Apparently, people are flooding their page with comments.”

Three days afterward, Nathan brought more news.

“More sponsors are reviewing Mom’s contracts.”

    “All because of our video?”

“And what she said about Sophie, Dad.”

Soon, the marketing director from the furniture company contacted me.

“Daniel, we watched your video. We’ve terminated Vanessa’s partnership.”

“I appreciate you letting me know.”

“Actually, there’s something else. We’re launching a restoration campaign, and we’d like your workshop involved.”

    “You’re offering me a contract?”

“Your work speaks for itself, Daniel. It always has.”

Before I could fully absorb the offer, Vanessa rang.

    “YOU DESTROYED MY CAREER!”

    “Good morning to you too.”

“Do you have any idea how much money I’ve lost?”

    “No.”

“Rob’s business partners saw everything! Now he’s blaming me for the scandal and threatening divorce!”

“That sounds like something you should discuss with Rob.”

    “You planned this!”

    “I told the truth.”

    “Delete that video!”

    “No.”

    “I’ll make you!”

“You’re welcome to speak with a lawyer.”

“After everything, you still want revenge.”

I glanced into the workshop, where Sophie was helping Nathan photograph a newly restored cabinet.

“No, Vanessa. I wanted our children to stop being treated like something shameful.”

    She ended the call.

I’d never encouraged anyone to abandon her social media accounts. I’d only revealed the family she’d hidden from her audience for a decade.

What mattered most, however, was Sophie’s reaction.

“Dad, people are saying nice things about us.”

    “Some people are.”

“One lady said our family looks happy.”

    “We are happy.”

    “Even without Mom?”

    I smiled.

“Especially when nobody’s making you feel guilty for being here.”

Three days later, Vanessa appeared at my workshop.

“Daniel, please. We could record a reconciliation video. It would help both of us.”

“Would you apologize to the children without cameras?”

    She hesitated.

    “That wouldn’t fix my reputation.”

    “Then there’s nothing to discuss.”

She continued arguing briefly, but eventually understood I wouldn’t reconsider and walked away.

For years, I’d believed shielding my children meant keeping quiet. I finally recognized that sometimes it required speaking up.

Months passed, and my workshop prospered, giving me more opportunities to spend time with my family.

One evening, Sophie sat beside me.

“Dad, do you ever regret having seven kids?”

“Only when someone eats my last slice of pizza.”

    She laughed.

    “Seriously?”

    “Never, sweetheart.”

She ran her fingers over the desk I’d restored for her birthday.

    “Mom said we deserved better.”

    “And what do you think?”

    Sophie smiled.

“I think we already had it.”

I’d devoted my career to restoring damaged things. Yet I’d come to understand that not everything deserved another chance.

And the family we’d created together had never needed repairing in the first place.
