Abandoned in a dilapidated shack: “Please don’t abandon us…” The cowboy made a decision that changed everything.

The wooden door broke under Sebastian Robles’ kick.

He entered, pistol in hand, breathing heavily, as the wind from the Sierra de Chihuahua pushed dust and dry leaves into the abandoned shack. The place smelled of dampness, old earth, and fear.

In a corner, on the dirt floor, two little girls were huddled together. They were twins, no more than four years old. One of them lifted her head with great effort. Her lips were chapped, her face dirty, and her eyes enormous, as if she had already seen more pain than any human being should know.

“Lord…” she whispered. “Please save us before my little sister d1es.”

    The other girl didn’t move.

Sebastian felt his heart stop. He had been a soldier, a farmhand, a ranch hand, and then a solitary rancher. He had seen men d1e on dusty roads and horses fall in storms. But nothing prepared him for seeing two little girls abandoned like animals.

    He knelt beside them.

—What’s your name, my little girl?

    —Lupita.

    —And your little sister?

—Rosita. She’s been asleep since yesterday. She’s not answering me anymore.

Sebastian touched Rosita’s forehead and clenched his teeth. The girl was burning with fever.

—How long have you been here?

Lupita tried to count on her fingers.

—Three nights… maybe four. Mom said to stay put. That she would be back before the moon came up.

    —What’s your mom’s name?

    -Isabel.

The name pierced his chest like a thorn.

    Isabel.

It had been ten years since Sebastián had heard that name without feeling guilty. Isabel had been the younger sister of his wife, Magdalena, the woman he had buried under a mesquite tree after a fever that no doctor would treat because Sebastián couldn’t pay in time.

Magdalena had d1ed at the age of twenty-five, leaving behind a son who was never born.

From then on, Sebastián lived alone at Rancho Los Encinos. He received no visitors, went to no parties, and spoke only when necessary. The townspeople said he had turned to stone. He never denied it. It was easier to be stone than to remain a man.

But that night, when she saw the girls, something inside her broke again.

—Listen to me, Lupita. I’m going to carry you both. I’m not going to hurt you.

    —Do you promise?

    —I promise on my soul.

The little girl clung to her vest with her weak little hands.

Sebastian carefully lifted them. They weighed so little that he felt a surge of anger. Outside, his horse, Relámpago, waited beside some dry prickly pear cacti. He mounted as best he could, the twins pressed against his chest, and rode toward the ranch before nightfall.

During the journey, he spoke without stopping.

—Lupita, don’t fall asleep. Tell me something. What do you like?

    —When Mom sings.

    —What does he sing?

—A song of the river… and of a white flower.

—Then sing it to me softly.

The girl began to sing with a voice so weak it seemed to come from another world.

When Sebastian arrived at the ranch, he shouted from the yard:

    —Doña Petra! Open the door!

The old woman who looked after the house came out with a lamp in her hand.

—Holy Virgin, Sebastian, what are you carrying there?

—Girls. One of them is dying. Heat water, broth, clean cloths. And send someone for Dr. Villaseñor.

    —Where did they come from?

—From the old hut by the stream.

    Doña Petra crossed herself.

—That shack has been abandoned for years.

    -Not anymore.

Sebastian led them to the room that had remained closed since Magdalena’s death. The bed still had the bedspread she had embroidered with red flowers. No one had slept there in ten years.

He gently laid Rosita down and placed Lupita beside her.

“She’s not going to d1e, is she?” Lupita asked.

Sebastian looked her in the eyes.

—Not tonight. Not while I’m here.

The doctor arrived around midnight. He examined Rosita, gave her drops, honey water, and ordered damp cloths. Then he took Sebastián aside in the hallway.

—He’s very ill. Dehydration, fever, hunger. If he had spent one more night…

    —But he’s going to live.

    The doctor sighed.

    —God willing, yes.

Sebastian returned to the bedside and didn’t move until dawn. He fed Rosita broth drop by drop. Lupita didn’t let go of his hand, even in her sleep.

As the sun rose, Rosita opened her eyes.

    “Mom…” she murmured.

    Lupita woke up suddenly.

    —Rosita!

Sebastian felt like his legs were almost giving out.

—Here you are, little one. You’re safe.

Rosita looked at him with glassy eyes.

    —Are you an angel?

For the first time in years, Sebastian almost smiled.

—No, my child. I am Sebastian.

    Lupita joined.

—Mom said not to trust anyone. But you came back.

—And I will always come back.

Then Lupita said something that changed everything:

—The man in the black sack took Mom away. He had a silver chain with a little horse on it.

Sebastian felt his blood run cold.

    I knew that chain.

It was carried by Don Anselmo Cárdenas, the most powerful man in the region. A moneylender, owner of cantinas, land, and influence. Everyone owed him something. Even the local sheriff owed him favors.

And Sebastian also knew him for another reason.

Don Anselmo had been the one who denied Magdalena medicine when he couldn’t pay the interest on an unjust debt. He had said, smiling, “Feelings don’t cancel accounts, Robles.”

    Magdalena d1ed two days later.

Sebastian went out onto the porch, looked at the saw, and clenched his fists.

“Not this time,” she whispered. “This time you’re not going to get away with it.”

He went to the town that same morning. He entered Rita Salgado’s cantina, a brave woman who knew everything that moved in those streets.

—I’m looking for Isabel —said Sebastian.

    Rita paled.

    —Get out of here.

—Your daughters are at my house. One almost d1ed.

Rita dropped the glass she was cleaning.

    -My God…

He told her that Isabel had arrived four nights earlier, beaten, begging for money to run away. Don Anselmo found her before she boarded the stagecoach. His men took her to an old house south of the river, where they held indebted women and forced them to work for him.

“There’s more, Sebastian,” Rita said softly. “Not just Isabel. There are several.”

Sebastian returned to the ranch at nightfall. Lupita was waiting for him, sitting on the bed.

    —Did you find Mom?

—I know where he might be.

—Are you going to bring it?

He knelt in front of her.

—I’m going to bring her or I’m not coming back.

    Lupita hugged his neck.

    —Then go back to her.

That night, Sebastian rode alone toward the old river house. He didn’t take the main road. He circled around mesquite trees and rocks, as he had learned during his years as a soldier. He saw two armed men at the entrance and a light on the second floor.

    Wait.

When one of the men went off to urinate among the trees, Sebastian silently subdued him. He surprised the second man from behind and left him tied up next to a post.

    He entered.

In a locked room, he found Isabel. She was thin, with a bruised face and marks on her wrists from ropes. When she saw him, she didn’t recognize him at first.

    -Who…?

    —Sebastián Robles.

    She opened her eyes.

    —Sebastian? My girls?

—You’re alive. Rosita is sick, but alive. Lupita is waiting for you.

Isabel put her hands to her mouth and fell to her knees crying.

—I left them… I left them there because Anselmo said that if I brought them, he would sell them. I thought someone would find them. I prayed to Mary Magdalene all night.

    Sebastian cut the ropes.

    —Then Magdalena heard.

When they left, Isabel could barely walk. Sebastian helped her onto the horse and rode back under a cold moon.

They arrived before dawn. Lupita ran barefoot from the room.

    -Mother!

Isabel fell to her knees and hugged her daughters as if she wanted to put them back inside her heart.

    Rosita, weak but awake, murmured:

    —I knew you’d come.

Sebastian stood at the door, without going in. That moment did not belong to him.

    But the peace was short-lived.

At dawn, four horsemen arrived at the ranch. Don Anselmo rode in front, wearing his black jacket, his fine hat, and the silver chain of the little horse gleaming on his chest. The municipal commander rode beside him.

—Robles— Anselmo shouted. —You have some of my property in your house.

Sebastian went out onto the porch with the rifle in his hand.

“This isn’t your property. There’s a mother and two girls here.”

    Anselmo smiled.

—Isabel owes me money. Her daughters are collateral.

Sebastian pointed at the ground, but did not lower the rifle.

—One person is no guarantee for anyone.

    The commander swallowed hard.

    —Sebastian, don’t complicate this.

—You shut up, Victor. We all know who pays for your uniform.

Anselmo dismounted his horse. In a swift motion, he pulled out a knife and grabbed Lupita, who had slipped out unnoticed behind Sebastián. He pressed her against his chest, the blade near her neck.

    —Drop the rifle, Robles.

    The world stopped.

Isabel screamed from inside the house. Rosita began to cry. Lupita was trembling, but she looked at Sebastián with impossible confidence.

He saw the silver chain. He saw the little horse. He saw Magdalena in her bed, without medicine. He saw Isabel beaten. He saw the girls on the dirt floor.

    And he fired.

The bullet ripped the knife from Anselmo’s hand and shattered his fingers. Lupita fell forward, and Sebastián caught her before she hit the ground. Anselmo’s men raised their weapons, but from the barn came Rita, the doctor, Doña Petra, and half a dozen ranchers whom Sebastián had alerted before going to the rescue.

“Put down your weapons!” Rita shouted. “We’ve already notified the federal judge. The river house is surrounded.”

The commander tried to flee, but the villagers pulled him off his horse. Anselmo, pale with pain and fury, spat on the ground.

    —This doesn’t end here.

    Sebastian hugged Lupita.

    —For you, yes.

Two weeks later, Anselmo Cárdenas was brought to trial. Isabel testified, as did other women rescued from the river house. False debts, stolen deeds, bribes, and disappearances were uncovered. The commander lost his badge and was imprisoned. Anselmo’s properties were seized to compensate his victims.

Isabel and the girls stayed in Los Encinos.

At first, she wanted to leave.

—I can’t be another burden to you, Sebastian.

He looked at her from the porch, where the twins were playing with an old dog.

—You are not a burden. You and your daughters brought life to a house that had been de:ad for ten years.

    Isabel wept silently.

—Magdalena was my sister. I should have looked for him sooner.

—And I should have gotten over my pain sooner. No one else could. But here we are.

Months passed. Rosita regained her color. Lupita learned to read with Doña Petra. Isabel planted flowers by the well. The house smelled again of bread, broth, clean clothes, and home.

One afternoon in December, as the first frost fell on the fields, Rosita took Sebastian’s hand.

    —Can I call him Dad?

He felt his soul being torn apart and healed at the same time.

—Only if you want to, my girl.

Lupita ran and hugged her other leg.

    —I want to too.

Isabel looked at them from the doorway, with tears in her eyes.

A year later, Sebastián and Isabel were married under the mesquite trees on the ranch. Rita brought flowers. The doctor played the guitar. Doña Petra cried throughout the ceremony. The twins walked in front of Isabel scattering white petals.

That night, Sebastian looked at the star-filled sky and thought of Magdalena. For the first time, her memory didn’t hurt like a wound. It hurt like a light.

He had believed that her life ended the day he buried her.

But a broken door, a dark shack, and the voice of a little girl pleading for help had taught him the truth.

Sometimes God doesn’t give you back what you lost.

Sometimes it puts you in front of someone who is also broken, so that together you can learn to live again.
