A month after her husband passed away, Laura made the bold decision to move into her parents’ old apartment in Miami. However, just a month into her new life there, her first love, Nathan, unexpectedly showed up at her door. Their relationship had been full of mystery—until Nathan simply disappeared. Now, Laura was finally about to learn the shocking reason why.

A month ago, 78-year-old Laura took the plunge and moved to her parents’ old apartment in Miami. They had bought the apartment when they retired many years ago, and Laura inherited it after they passed away. But Laura’s life had always been in Durham, North Carolina, and the apartment had served as a vacation spot for her family over the years.

She had considered moving after her husband, Charles, died six years ago, but it never happened. At that time, her daughter, Melissa, had just had her first child, and Laura didn’t want to leave them. Still, the apartment in Miami lingered in her thoughts.

When Melissa announced she was pregnant with her second child, Laura made an offer. She didn’t want Melissa to go into debt looking for a larger house, so Laura offered them her family home. It was big enough to accommodate a growing family and was located in a great school district.

Melissa had so many fond memories of the house that she immediately agreed. “Are you sure you don’t want to live with us? This house has plenty of space for everyone,” Melissa suggested when Laura explained she would be moving to Miami.

“No, darling. You need your space, and I need mine. Besides, the apartment’s been empty for years, and it’s perfect for older folks. Plus, I’ve really missed the beach… a warm beach, I mean,” Laura replied, giving her daughter a reassuring pat on the shoulder.

The move was tough, but Laura loved Miami. She was also happy that Melissa and her family would no longer be burdened by rent or a mortgage, since her old house was completely paid off.

Every morning, Laura would sit on her balcony, basking in the sunlight. Doctors might say too much sun is bad for the skin, but there was something about the light and the salty air from the sea that soothed her soul. She couldn’t have been happier with her decision.

One afternoon, as she was making a sandwich with chips for lunch, the doorbell rang. She took off her apron and went to answer it, thinking it was her chatty next-door neighbor. But when she opened the door, it wasn’t Mrs. Cardigan.

Laura’s eyes widened in shock when she saw the man standing at her doorstep. It was Nathan, her first love. And if she were being honest with herself, he was the love of her life. Over the years, despite her deep love for her husband, Charles, Nathan had always lingered in her heart.

They were both in their 20s when they were together, and most people would never believe it, but their love had felt like something out of a romance novel. It was passionate, intense, and full of fire. The downside? It was also volatile—some might even call it toxic. But Laura had been in love.

There was another issue, though: Nathan’s mysterious nature. She knew almost nothing about his family or personal life, but she didn’t care, even when he disappeared for days, weeks, and sometimes months at a time. It was harder to accept, but whenever she questioned him, he deflected the topic, so eventually, she stopped asking.

Then, one day, Nathan left her apartment with a smile on his face, and that was the last time she saw him. She waited for him to come back but had no way of contacting him. After a year of hoping, Laura moved on. She met Charles, married him, and Nathan became a distant memory.

But here he was, standing at her door as though no time had passed. Her mind raced with questions: *How did he find me in Miami? Why is he here? Does he think he can just show up after all these years? What does he want?*

Finally, Nathan broke the silence. “Hey, Laura. How are you?”

“*Hey?* It’s been over 50 years, Nathan. Why are you here? How did you find me?” Laura asked, her voice shaking with disbelief. She couldn’t believe Nathan was so casual after all this time.

“I know. I want to explain everything. But… will you let me in?” he asked, offering her that same wild grin that still made her heart skip a beat. His face was weathered with wrinkles, and he didn’t stand as straight as he once had, but he was still… Nathan. Just Nathan.

“Fine. Come in,” Laura huffed, crossing her arms, leading him into her apartment.

Once inside, Nathan sat down and asked, “How have you been all these years?”

“I don’t have time for small talk, Nathan. I want answers. Real answers this time. I haven’t forgotten how you ignored me back then and changed the subject. You’re either going to start talking now, or you can leave,” Laura snapped, sitting across from him with her arms still crossed.

“Okay… this isn’t easy. But back then, my parents didn’t want me to date anyone. When I turned 20, they arranged a marriage for me with the daughter of one of their wealthiest friends. But I didn’t want that. I was only pretending. I fell in love with you, but I knew they wouldn’t approve,” Nathan explained with a deep sigh.

Laura’s mouth dropped open in shock. Nathan continued, “Whenever I disappeared, I was with her—Kiara. She liked to travel. She was very demanding. But I always came back to you.”

“Until the last time. I waited for you for a whole year, Nathan. A whole year!” Laura’s voice cracked as she tried to hold back tears. “And you were with someone else the entire time.”

“I wasn’t!” Nathan insisted. “I swear I wasn’t. What I had with her was NOT romantic. I didn’t even hold her hand. She knew I didn’t want the arranged marriage, but Kiara forced me to pay attention to her. If I didn’t, she would’ve told my parents about us, and that would’ve been a disaster for you.”

Laura was silent for a moment, processing his words. She didn’t want to believe him, but he sounded sincere. “Okay… then why didn’t you come back sooner?” she asked quietly.

“That year was insane. I was graduating, my father got me a big internship, and Kiara started planning our wedding. It was all so complicated. I couldn’t see you. Then Kiara died in a car accident, and everything got even messier. But I stayed away for a while, helped her parents because they thought I was her fiancé, and then, when I could, I tried to come back to you,” Nathan said, his gaze dropping as if he couldn’t bear the weight of his confession.

“Oh wow. I’m sorry. I mean, I wouldn’t wish harm on anyone,” Laura said softly, but then she remembered something he’d said. “You said you *returned*. When did you return?”

“One day, I went to your house and saw another man there. I didn’t know what he meant to you, but I knew I couldn’t just show up and ruin everything after all this time. I came by your house every day for a month, and he was always there, so I stopped coming. I heard you two got married,” Nathan explained.

“Yeah, that was my late husband, Charles.”

    “My condolences.”

“So what happens now?” Laura asked, raising an eyebrow.

“I don’t know. I just wanted to explain everything to you, and maybe we could start a friendship,” Nathan suggested.

“How did you find me all the way down here?”

“I moved to Miami in my 30s. I’ve been here ever since. I never had a family. After I lost you, I couldn’t fall in love with anyone else. Kiara’s death haunted me, too. But about 20 years ago, I saw your parents around. I found out where they lived and hoped I’d run into you eventually. When they passed, I saw that you hadn’t sold the apartment, so I kept waiting,” Nathan said.

Laura could hardly believe what she was hearing. Nathan had never married or had children. He had been waiting for her to come back for more than 20 years.

“Would you like a sandwich, Nathan?” she asked, trying to change the subject.

From then on, Nathan started visiting her every day. At first, they were just friends, chatting about everything under the sun. But eventually, they could no longer deny the feelings that still existed between them. No matter how many years had passed, their love never truly faded. It was like a candle that only needed to be relit to burn bright again.
