Hardly anyone knew that Derek Ryder even had a mother.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Whenever his friends brought up their parents, Derek would go silent or quickly change the subject. No one was ever invited over to his house\u2014no movie nights, no birthday parties, not even for a quick video game session.<\/p>\n

From elementary school through his senior year of high school, Derek\u2019s home remained off-limits.<\/p>\n

When he began dating, he came up with convenient lies to avoid bringing his girlfriends over.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom\u2019s super religious,\u201d he\u2019d say. \u201cShe\u2019s strict about dating and all that.\u201d But the truth was much more complicated\u2014and far more painful.<\/p>\n

Derek was deeply ashamed of his mother.<\/p>\n

To him, she looked like something out of a horror film. Gail Ryder had only one functioning eye, and the left side of her face was covered in scars.<\/p>\n

For as long as Derek could remember, this had been her appearance. When he was a little boy, it hadn\u2019t mattered.<\/p>\n

She was just his mom, warm and loving. But as he grew older, he started noticing how others reacted to her.<\/p>\n

On his first day of school, Derek had watched the way other parents stared at his mother, despite her efforts to cover up with dark sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.<\/p>\n

That night, he told her firmly, \u201cI don\u2019t want you walking me to the school gate anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gail was taken aback. \u201cBut, sweetheart, the other moms walk their children in, too. You\u2019re still little.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re a freak!\u201d Derek shouted. \u201cI heard Bobby\u2019s mom say it. And now everyone will think I\u2019m a freak too!\u201d<\/p>\n

From that day on, Gail never stepped onto school grounds again.<\/p>\n

Every morning, she would drop him off at a distance, her cheeks wet with silent tears. Her son was embarrassed by her, and it crushed her spirit.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Derek lived comfortably in denial. As long as his mother stayed out of sight, he was content to fabricate whatever stories he needed to protect his social image.<\/p>\n

To his classmates, she was either a shut-in or a devout woman who preferred seclusion. Anything but the truth.<\/p>\n

Desperate, he contacted a talent agency and hired a professional actress to pose as his mother.<\/p>\n

She was everything he had imagined a mom should be: elegant, warm, and unscarred.<\/p>\n

Derek gave her precise instructions on how to dress, what to say, and even how to interact with his teachers. He told her to pick him up from home just before the ceremony.<\/p>\n

That morning, Gail spotted her son in his graduation cap and gown and lit up. \u201cDerek! It\u2019s today, isn\u2019t it? Give me just a moment to get changed!\u201d she said excitedly.<\/p>\n

\u201cChanged? For what?\u201d Derek asked, feigning ignorance.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor your graduation, honey!\u201d Gail replied, already moving toward her closet.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not coming,\u201d Derek said coldly.
\n\u201cI\u2019ve spent my entire life hiding you. Why would I let you ruin the most important day of my life by showing up with your ugly face?\u201d<\/p>\n

Gail\u2019s one eye filled with tears. \u201cDerek,\u201d she whispered, \u201chow can you say that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust face it, Mom,\u201d Derek snapped.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re a freak. I\u2019ve always been embarrassed by you. I\u2019ve hired someone else to pretend to be you. Do you get it now?\u201d<\/p>\n

Gail went pale, her lips trembling. She gave a slow nod. \u201cOh, my son,\u201d she murmured.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so sorry\u2026\u201d But Derek had already walked out the door.<\/p>\n

Two weeks later, he left for college in California. He never reached out again.<\/p>\n

A decade passed.<\/p>\n

Then one day, Derek received a call informing him that his mother had passed away.<\/p>\n

Her funeral had been arranged by neighbors and friends. She had left everything to Derek\u2014her modest home and, to his astonishment, a substantial estate.<\/p>\n

Dumbfounded, he met with her attorney, Mr. Terry Arlington.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cYour mother left you nearly $700,000, plus the house, which is now worth over $1.5 million,\u201d the lawyer informed him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t understand,\u201d Derek said. \u201cMy dad left her with nothing. She lived so simply. Where did this come from?\u201d<\/p>\n

Arlington gave him a long look.<\/p>\n

\u201cSurely you know the story,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen you were three, you approached a dangerous dog at the park. Your mother threw herself between you and the animal. She was horribly injured\u2014lost her eye, suffered disfigurement. She was awarded a settlement and a lifetime insurance payout.\u201d<\/p>\n

Derek sat in stunned silence.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would have been me,\u201d he whispered. Tears filled his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always thought she was one of the bravest, most selfless people I\u2019d ever met,\u201d Arlington added gently. \u201cYou must have been very proud of her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Derek didn\u2019t reply. He left the office, went straight to the cemetery, and knelt by her grave.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry, Mom,\u201d he choked out. \u201cYou saved my life\u2026 and I treated you like a burden. Please forgive me.\u201d<\/p>\n

From that day forward, Derek stopped hiding the truth. He placed one of the few photos he had of his mother\u2014wearing her large sunglasses\u2014on his desk.<\/p>\n
