One older woman across the aisle gasped and looked at the parents, as if they had said something terrible to her.<\/p>\n

The flight attendant\u2019s tone shifted instantaneously. \u201cOf course, madam. \u201cI\u2019ll get it right away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGod, it\u2019s always something with people,\u201d said the mother, rolling her eyes. \u201cMy son has needs, too! He dislikes looking at food when he is unable to eat it. \u201cIt\u2019s called empathy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour son has an iPad, headphones, and hasn\u2019t looked up once,\u201d I told you. \u201cAnd he\u2019s eating Skittles right now.\u201d I nodded at the colorful candy scattered around his platter.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s different,\u201d she complained.<\/p>\n

I smiled nicely as I grabbed the food box and drink from the attendant and asked, \u201cYou know what else it\u2019s called?\u201d Managing your own child. \u201cNot the entire cabin.\u201d<\/p>\n

I snarfed my crackers and cheese, chugged my soda, and felt my blood sugar begin to stabilize. The relief was immediate, both physically and emotionally.<\/p>\n

The final two hours passed without incident. The youngster never looked up from his game or saw anyone eating. What about the parents? They didn\u2019t say another word to me.<\/p>\n

That day on the plane showed me that speaking for your health isn\u2019t disrespectful. It is necessary.<\/p>\n

The kindest thing you can do for yourself is to resist others\u2019 attempts to downplay your demands. My ailment is not visible, but it is genuine, and I have every right to manage it appropriately.<\/p>\n
