As I crossed the parking lot, squinting against the blinding light, something caught my attention. I turned my head \u2014 and froze. Inside a parked car, a German Shepherd sat slumped on the seat. The windows were rolled up tight. She was panting hard, her tongue hanging out, her eyes glassy. The windows were fogged from her breath. Anyone could see she was barely holding on. When it\u2019s 30\u00b0C outside, the inside of a car is so much worse.<\/p>\n
\u201cYour dog\u2019s in trouble. She\u2019s overheating. Please come back and open the window.\u201d
But his reply was flat and cold.
\u201cI left her water. Mind your own business.\u201d<\/p>\n
Yes, there was water \u2014 but in a sealed bottle. My stomach turned. How was she supposed to drink that? I knew I couldn\u2019t stand there and wait. My eyes landed on a rock nearby. I picked it up, my heart pounding, and swung it at the glass with all my strength. The window shattered, the alarm blaring in my ears. I didn\u2019t care.<\/p>\n
She was still breathing hard, but I could already see a little life coming back to her. I poured water over her fur, trying to cool her down, and called for help.<\/p>\n
Minutes later, the \u201cowner\u201d stormed up, his face twisted with anger.

But when the officers arrived, they listened to both sides, saw the dog\u2019s condition, and made their decision. I hadn\u2019t broken the law. He got a fine, and they opened an animal cruelty case against him. One of the officers shook my hand and said, \u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n
As for the dog?<\/p>\n
She\u2019s lying beside me right now, belly full, tail thumping, completely at ease. The same German Shepherd who nearly didn\u2019t make it through yesterday is now safe, loved, and home.<\/p>\n
