Something felt different the moment I opened my eyes. My head was cold. I reached up, half-asleep, and froze. My fingers touched nothing but smooth skin. Not a single strand.<\/p>\n
My heart raced as I stumbled into the bathroom. The mirror showed a stranger\u2014completely bald, eyes wide, lips trembling.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo\u2026\u201d I whispered, tears spilling before I could stop them.<\/p>\n
I sank onto the edge of the bed, my face buried in my hands. I told myself it could be anything\u2014illness, a reaction, bad luck. But deep down, a thought I didn\u2019t want to believe pressed in: He<\/em> might have done it.<\/p>\nThe Phone Call<\/strong><\/h2>\n
With shaking hands, I dialed his number.<\/p>\n
\u201cWas it you?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d His voice was calm, almost detached.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2026 I have no hair,\u201d I said, my voice breaking.<\/p>\n
He sighed. \u201cI\u2019ve told you before\u2014your hair is everywhere. In the bathroom, in the kitchen, in the bedroom. I\u2019m tired of it. Now, there won\u2019t be any more.\u201d<\/p>\n
A tight ache filled my chest.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can\u2019t be serious,\u201d I said, my voice rising. But he was already explaining, calling it \u201ctidy\u201d and \u201cnecessary.\u201d<\/p>\n
We went back and forth, but in his mind, he had done nothing wrong. In mine, it was something I couldn\u2019t forgive.<\/p>\n
The Decision<\/strong><\/h2>\n
At some point, I stopped listening. I knew what I would do.<\/p>\n
The first thing I did was pull all his clothes from the closet. I carried them outside and set them on fire, watching the smoke curl upward like a weight lifting from my chest.<\/p>\n
Then I went to the bedroom, grabbed the old laptop that had been collecting dust on top of the wardrobe for months, and tossed it straight into the trash.<\/p>\n
Next was the treadmill. It had been sitting in the corner for years, untouched. I took it apart piece by piece and dragged it out.<\/p>\n
The Last Conversation<\/strong><\/h2>\n
That evening, he came home. Irritated. Hungry.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy isn\u2019t dinner ready?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n
I met his eyes. \u201cBecause I didn\u2019t make any.\u201d<\/p>\n
He opened his mouth, but I was already zipping up my bag.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m done cleaning up after you. I\u2019m done pretending. And I\u2019m done with someone who could do something like this.\u201d<\/p>\n
