The flight was supposed to be easy\u2014just an hour and a half in the air. I had the window seat, a book tucked into my bag, and the quiet comfort of knowing I\u2019d soon be back on solid ground.<\/p>\n

In front of me sat a woman in a colorful sweater. Even before we took off, she kept wriggling in her seat. The moment the wheels left the runway, she shoved her seat back\u2014hard.<\/p>\n

My knees hit instantly. I leaned forward and said softly, \u201cExcuse me, could you raise your seat a little? It\u2019s very tight here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Without turning around, she replied, \u201cI\u2019m more comfortable this way,\u201d and leaned back even further.<\/p>\n

When Kindness Meets a Wall<\/strong><\/h2>\n

For half an hour, things were tolerable. I stretched my ankles, breathed deeply, and told myself the worst had passed.<\/p>\n

But then\u2014bang! Her seat snapped back again, pinning my knees harder than before.<\/p>\n

I whispered under my breath, \u201cUnbelievable.\u201d She gave no sign she heard.<\/p>\n

I opened my eyes wide in mock alarm. \u201cOh no! I\u2019m so sorry\u2014your seat moved back so suddenly, and the tray is so small\u2026 accidents happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

She glared at me and waved for the flight attendant.<\/p>\n

The Attendant\u2019s Verdict<\/strong><\/h2>\n


The attendant returned, her calm smile still intact. \u201cWhat seems to be the problem?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe spilled juice all over me!\u201d the woman exclaimed.<\/p>\n

I raised my hands. \u201cI had my drink on the tray, and when the seat moved back suddenly, it just tipped over. These trays aren\u2019t very steady.\u201d<\/p>\n
