In that instant, Erlich made a decision. He held the boy close once more and turned away.<\/p>\n
\u2014 Hey! Give him back! \u2014 the woman screamed, but she didn\u2019t dare step forward.<\/p>\n
Erlich walked calmly to the house of an elderly neighbor, a kind woman who often looked after others in the area. He knocked firmly on her door.<\/p>\n
\u2014 Please, help the boy, \u2014 he said, breathless. \u2014 Call the police. His mother almost let him be taken by the river.<\/p>\n
The neighbor wasted no time. She dialed immediately. Within minutes, the police arrived. They listened, they saw, and they took the mother away, though she continued to hurl insults until the very end.<\/p>\n
After the investigation, the mother lost her parental rights. The boy first stayed with the elderly neighbor, who cared for him gently, and later he was placed with a foster family who could give him the warmth and protection he needed.<\/p>\n
