When noon came, the ceremony ended and laughter filled the yard. But the moment of joy was destr0yed when Diego\u2019s mother, Do\u00f1a Beatriz, stood up and announced,<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t stay silent. Mar\u00eda\u2019s father is a garbage collector!\u201d <\/strong><\/h1>\n

She showed a photo of Don Manuel pushing a trash cart, his boots worn, his hands calloused. \u201cSee? This man collects garbage!\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence fell. Mar\u00eda\u2019s mother wept. \u201cYes, he does but that job fed our family and paid for Mar\u00eda\u2019s education!\u201d<\/p>\n

Then the sound of an engine echoed down the street. A garbage truck stopped in front of the house. Don Manuel stepped out, calm and proud, holding a small wooden box. \u201cYes, I collect garbage,\u201d he said evenly, \u201cbut do you know why?\u201d<\/p>\n

Beatriz sneered. \u201cFor money, obviously.\u201d He shook his head. \u201cNot just for money. Look.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inside the box were old photos, documents, and a gold medal. His voice trembled as he explained, \u201cThirty years ago, I was an engineer in Puebla. After a factory explosion, I saved ten men from the flames. I was badly burned and lost my career but I received this medal. One of those men was named Esteban Fern\u00e1ndez.\u201d<\/p>\n

Don Esteban stepped forward, stunned. \u201cYou\u2026 saved my life?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d Don Manuel replied softly. \u201cI never imagined meeting you again.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Don Manuel wasn\u2019t done. He unfolded an old deed. \u201cThis land in central Puebla – worth millions now belongs to Mar\u00eda. I never mentioned it. I wanted her to marry for love, not money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gasps rippled through the crowd. Mar\u00eda cried, \u201cDad, you never told me.\u201d He smiled gently. \u201cYou didn\u2019t need to know. Your happiness was enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

Do\u00f1a Beatriz stood pale and trembling.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2026 was wrong. Please forgive me.\u201d \u201cThere\u2019s nothing to forgive,\u201d said Don Manuel. \u201cLet love speak louder than pride.\u201d<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Mar\u00eda hugged her father tightly. \u201cThank you for everything, Dad.\u201d He smiled. \u201cYour joy is all I ever wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n
