The door opened.
Her daughter, Helen, stepped in with the man beside her.<\/p>\n

At that very moment, Officer Brooks\u2014Margaret\u2019s longtime neighbor\u2014knocked and entered.

He threw the boy onto the larger slab and leapt after him, hitting the edge hard. His pant leg turned dark with blood, but he didn\u2019t stop.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ll heal before your next birthday,\u201d he grinned. \u201cMen don\u2019t quit that easy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ice carried them farther downriver, spinning between chunks of white.<\/p>\n

The Rescue<\/strong><\/h3>\n

On shore, the crowd gasped as the two disappeared around the bend.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re gone!\u201d someone cried.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot yet,\u201d Officer Brooks muttered, jumping into his patrol truck. \u201cThat man knows what he\u2019s doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Out on the ice, Gabriel held Vince close to keep him warm.
\u201cListen, kiddo. That was the first test. Second one\u2019s coming. We\u2019re gonna hit that riverbank hard. When it happens, we move to the far edge, okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

The ice slammed into the shore. Both of them tumbled off onto the gravel.
\u201cWe made it!\u201d Gabriel laughed, hugging the boy.<\/p>\n

Moments later, the police truck screeched to a stop.
\u201cYou two alive?\u201d Brooks yelled, running over.<\/p>\n

Back home, Helen was sobbing on her bed. Margaret stood silently by the window when her phone buzzed.
