My dog had never acted this way before.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Rick had always been an intelligent, gentle dog – obedient, quiet, and never barking unless there was a real reason. But something had changed over the past few weeks. He\u2019d begun barking late at night, standing upright near the kitchen cupboards, and, bizarrely, climbing up to the top shelves \u2014 places I barely touched myself.<\/p>\n

At first, I chalked it up to age or nerves. Maybe the neighbors were being noisy, or perhaps a stray cat had found its way in. But his behavior grew more intense \u2014 unsettlingly so. Rick knew he wasn\u2019t allowed on the furniture, yet he refused to come down, fixated on the ceiling, growling softly, as if warning me of something I couldn\u2019t see.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is it, boy? What are you looking at?\u201d I whispered, crouching beside him. He tilted his head, ears pricked, and let out a sharp bark. Every time I moved closer, he barked again \u2014 louder, more desperate.<\/p>\n
