One hot afternoon in Quezon City, Maria \u2013 a 35-year-old woman, thin and pale-faced \u2013 suddenly fainted at home.<\/p>\n

The doctor said she was anemic and extremely weak, and needed to be hospitalized for observation.<\/p>\n

Her husband, Roberto, was indifferent. He coldly retracted a sentence:<\/p>\n

\u201cTake care of that, I\u2019m busy with work.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the \u201cwork\u201d Roberto mentioned was preparing for a trip to Europe with his girlfriend \u2013 a young woman named Lara, an employee of the same company, smart and attractive, with a child at home who was about three years old.<\/p>\n

She sat down heavily on the chair, her hands shaking as she held onto the bed.<\/p>\n

That night, after feeding her granddaughter, Grandma Teresita quietly called home:<\/p>\n

\u201cMang Mario, tomorrow you will send the three sacks of rice, some chickens, and the land title to Manila, okay? I will take care of something here.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next morning, Grandma went to the bank, withdrew all 1.3 million pesos in savings \u2013 the money she had saved for her old age.<\/p>\n

Then she took her to the hospital, paid all of Maria\u2019s hospital bills, and paid Bea\u2019s one-year school fees.<\/p>\n

He entered the house, laughing and pulling out his suitcase, not expecting to see his mother waiting for him, with two neighbors and a ward official by his side.<\/p>\n

She placed a stack of papers on the table, her voice calm:<\/p>\n
