My husband has never been the type to enjoy parties, but still, I wanted to do something small and special for his 40th birthday without him knowing a thing.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

So, two days before his birthday, I told him that I needed to travel to my sister\u2019s place because she supposedly needed urgent help. He didn\u2019t question it at all. He even supported me to go, saying he wasn\u2019t planning to celebrate his birthday anyway.<\/p>\n

But instead of going to my sister\u2019s, I stayed over at my friend Karen\u2019s house to prepare a surprise party.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaria, are you sure about this?\u201d Karen asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know Tom really doesn\u2019t like birthday surprises.\u201d<\/p>\n

But I wanted to do something meaningful for him. Something memorable. So, I called his parents, his brother Jim, his best friend and his wife, along with a few colleagues from his office. I told them all about the surprise.<\/p>\n

Of course, that meant I spent quite a bit on food, decorations, balloons, drinks – you name it. I wanted everything to look perfect.<\/p>\n

Since Tom usually gets home around 6 p.m., I asked everyone to arrive before then to help set up.<\/p>\n

One by one, his guests came through the door.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cMaria, this looks amazing,\u201d Lisa told me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you! Can you help with the balloon garlands?\u201d I handed her a giant bag of balloons.<\/p>\n

Everyone pitched in, and by 5:30 p.m., the house looked wonderful. A large banner stretched across the wall reading, \u201cHappy 40th, Tom!\u201d<\/p>\n

By 5:45 p.m., we grouped together quietly in the kitchen.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, he should be here any minute,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cLights off. Everyone hide!\u201d<\/p>\n

We all tried to tuck ourselves behind counters and furniture, stifling giggles. I was crouched behind the kitchen island, my heart pounding. That\u2019s when the front door opened and I heard a female voice ask:<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you think he\u2019ll like it?\u201d<\/p>\n

My bl00d ran cold. A woman? Who was she?<\/p>\n

The lights flicked on and everyone stood frozen.<\/p>\n

A young couple stood in the doorway, just as startled as we were. The man held a set of keys. The woman carried a suitcase.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho are you?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho are you?\u201d she shot back.<\/p>\n

Jim rose from behind the kitchen table and blurted, \u201cWe\u2019re here for a surprise birthday party!\u201d<\/p>\n

The man blinked at us. \u201cWe\u2026 rented this place on Airbnb.\u201d<\/p>\n

My jaw dropped. \u201cAirbnb? This is my house!\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Within seconds, the horrible truth set in:<\/p>\n

Tom had listed the house online since he thought I was leaving town.<\/p>\n

I grabbed my phone. \u201cTom. Did you rent out our house?\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a long pause. Then he said, \u201cYeah\u2026 I thought we could earn a little extra while you were gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t go, Tom. I stayed to throw you an amazing party.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fifteen minutes later, he walked in, red-faced with embarrassment. \u201cI was trying to save up for a trip for the two of us,\u201d he shared quietly.<\/p>\n

Somehow, the awkward tension slowly melted into laughter. Eventually, the Airbnb couple attended the celebration, too.<\/p>\n
