\nNo fall.<\/p>\n
My husband was sitting up, but not in his wheelchair: he was on the bed, propped up with a strength he supposedly didn\u2019t have.<\/p>\n
And he wasn\u2019t alone.<\/p>\n
His arms were around a girl, also in a wheelchair, their mouths pressed together, kissing like the world was about to end.<\/p>\n
I, who had washed his body, his back, his useless legs for ten years\u2026 could only whisper:<\/p>\n
\u201cWeren\u2019t you\u2026 weren\u2019t you paralyzed?\u201d<\/p>\n
The girl turned away in terror; he tried to back away and mumbled a few sounds\u2026 until finally he spoke, slowly but clearly:<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t\u2026 don\u2019t scare her\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
A chill ran down my spine. It had been years since I\u2019d heard him utter a complete sentence.<\/p>\n
The girl, crying, tried to explain:<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2026 he\u2019s been moving more for a while now. I\u2019m not the other woman\u2026 please, listen to me\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
I gritted my teeth.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen what are you?\u201d<\/p>\n
The young woman lowered her head.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m\u2026 his physical therapy partner for the last three years. I also lost mobility in my legs\u2026 and he was learning to move half his body. We spent months together at the rehabilitation center\u2026 I saw him take his first step.\u201d<\/p>\n
My knees trembled.<\/p>\n
\u201cThree years\u2026? Three years of moving\u2026 talking\u2026? And I was still changing diapers and pushing the chair?\u201d<\/p>\n
He remained silent.<\/p>\n
The girl added:<\/p>\n
\u201cHe didn\u2019t want to tell you. He was afraid. He thought you would leave him if you knew he was getting better. He wasn\u2019t progressing as quickly as he wanted\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
I laughed bitterly:<\/p>\n
\u201cThree years without saying \u2018I can move a little now\u2019? Or three years to fall in love with someone else?\u201d<\/p>\n
The silence weighed like a tombstone.<\/p>\n
I approached him:<\/p>\n
\u201cYou weren\u2019t disabled. You just stayed there\u2026 while I wasted away taking care of you.\u201d<\/p>\n
He clasped his hands, almost pleading:<\/p>\n
\u201cForgive me\u2026 don\u2019t abandon me\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
I shook my head slowly.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not abandoning you. I\u2019m giving you back the life you chose far from me.\u201d<\/p>\n
I grabbed my things and left, letting the door close on its own.<\/p>\n
In Tlaquepaque, the whole neighborhood found out.<\/p>\n
The doctors at the Rehabilitation Center confirmed:<\/p>\n
He regained partial mobility four years ago, he’s been able to walk with support for two years, and he preferred that I continue caring for him because \u201che wasn’t ready to face reality.\u201d<\/p>\n
They say I was a fool.<\/p>\n
But no one understands what it’s like to give your entire youth to someone\u2026 only for them to wake up in someone else’s arms.<\/p>\n
I just said:<\/p>\n
“The one who was paralyzed for ten years\u2026 was never him.”<\/p>\n
It was me.
