I stood in an old jacket, clutching a folder of documents, and silently watched as my husband hurriedly unloaded a bundle of damp firewood and a bag of grain from the trunk. He did everything quickly, nervously\u2014as if he was afraid to linger around me for an extra minute.<\/p>\n

“I changed the locks on the apartment! You won’t be able to come home,” he shouted from the car.<\/p>\n

The children were sitting in the backseat. They didn’t look at me. They’d already been explained everything\u2014in their own way.<\/p>\n

“There’s NOTHING in the folder! Passport, money, cards\u2014EVERYTHING’S GONE!”<\/p>\n

He almost screamed. “What have you done?”<\/p>\n

I imagined the scene: the check-in counter, the confused man, his lover with a ticket in her hand and a cold gaze. They let her through. He\u2014not.<\/p>\n

“Has your lover already cleared security?” \u2014 I clarified.<\/p>\n

He fell silent. The silence was sweet.<\/p>\n

“She’s leaving alone”\u2014 he finally hissed. “And you… you’ll regret it. Where are you, anyway?”<\/p>\n

I looked at the dark window, where snow was falling softly.<\/p>\n

“It’s none of your business where I am.” I said. “The documents are where you left me. Come and pick them up. They’re already soaked through in the snow.”<\/p>\n
