I nearly lost my balance.<\/p>\n

The sky that morning was low and gray, the kind that presses down on you and promises rain without quite delivering it. I remember thinking I should hurry\u2014finish the branches before the weather turned. The ladder was already propped against the trunk, steady enough at a glance, and I didn\u2019t feel like putting the job off again.<\/p>\n

Then came the pull.<\/p>\n

I looked down, startled, and saw my dog scrambling at the ladder, his paws slipping on the metal rungs. His nails scraped loudly, uselessly. He wasn\u2019t barking. He wasn\u2019t playing. His eyes were locked onto mine\u2014wide, intense, almost frantic.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey! Stop that,\u201d I laughed, trying to wave him off.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t stop.<\/p>\n

Instead, he bit down again and pulled harder, his body braced with a strength I didn\u2019t know he had. The ladder wobbled. My stomach clenched.<\/p>\n

I felt irritation flare. What is wrong with you? I thought. I scolded him, tried to step higher, but he refused to let go. Each time I moved up, he dragged me back down, desperate, relentless.<\/p>\n

My heart started to race. If he startled me again while I was higher up, I could fall. Badly. Frustrated and confused, I climbed down, grabbed his collar, and led him to his kennel. He didn\u2019t resist. He didn\u2019t bark. He just lowered his head, tail tucked, as if he\u2019d failed.<\/p>\n

Guilt washed over me\u2014but I pushed it aside. He\u2019ll calm down, I told myself. Then I\u2019ll finish.<\/p>\n

I walked back to the ladder.<\/p>\n

The moment I placed my foot on the first rung, a cold chill ran through my body.<\/p>\n

As I shifted my weight, the ground beneath the ladder collapsed.<\/p>\n

There was a hollow crack\u2014sharp, final\u2014and the ladder slid forward, crashing onto the stones and tools below. I stood frozen, staring at it, my breath trapped in my chest.<\/p>\n

He\u2019d felt the soft earth. Heard something shift beneath the soil overnight. Sensed danger where I saw routine. Every pull, every desperate tug\u2014it hadn\u2019t been disobedience.<\/p>\n

It had been protection.<\/p>\n

I walked back to the kennel, legs shaking. The moment he saw me, his tail wagged wildly, relief pouring out of him. I knelt down and wrapped my arms around him, burying my face in his fur.<\/p>\n
