He worked far beyond the northern border, in places without names\u2014deserts where the sun burned the skin raw, mountains where men labored without contracts, without phones, without protection. There were no guarantees there, only rumors of money and the unspoken rule that no one asked questions. He didn\u2019t call. He didn\u2019t write. He didn\u2019t send a single peso home.<\/p>\n

On the small table nearby sat a single bowl of broth\u2014so watered down it was nearly clear, now cold. A few loose bouillon cubes lay scattered beside it, like evidence of how long they had been stretching nothing into something.<\/p>\n

A year.<\/p>\n

A million pesos.<\/p>\n

And he had come back just in time to realize how close he was to losing everything that ever mattered.<\/p>\n

\u2014Maura! Son! \u2014Leandro shouted, kneeling down.<\/p>\n

He touched the child’s forehead.<\/p>\n

It was burning.<\/p>\n

Maura opened her eyes for barely a second.<\/p>\n

“Leandro\u2026?” she whispered. “Don’t let him die\u2026”<\/p>\n

Leandro didn’t think.

The neighbors came out alarmed. One started his truck and took them to the San Arcadio regional hospital .<\/p>\n

In the emergency room, Leandro collapsed to the floor.
