It started after a snowfall. Ben ran into the kitchen, cheeks red from the cold, grinning ear to ear.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, Mr. Dickinson says he\u2019ll pay me ten dollars every time I shovel his driveway!\u201d<\/p>\n

Dickinson lived across the street. He was rich, arrogant, and loved reminding people of it. Still, Ben was proud, already planning how to spend his earnings: a scarf for me, a dollhouse for his sister Annie, and a telescope with whatever was left.<\/p>\n

For weeks, Ben shoveled every morning before school. I watched from the window as he worked through the cold, smiling despite frozen fingers. Each night, he carefully counted his money, getting closer to his goal.<\/p>\n

Then, two days before Christmas, he came home early\u2014shaking, eyes full of tears.<\/p>\n
