Something inside Alan gave way. He bent down, pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead, and held her hand tighter.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t do anything wrong,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cYou\u2019re safe now.\u201d<\/p>\n

And for the first time since that terrible night, he believed it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He looked around the apartment\u2014its peeling paint, cracked blinds, and heavy memories\u2014and didn\u2019t feel a trace of regret.<\/p>\n
