\nThen Ben, an accountant, parked his Honda Civic beside them.<\/p>\n

Inside the garage, the boasting began.<\/p>\n

\u201cWow, Ricky! Another new car?\u201d Sheila laughed.
\n\u201cOf course,\u201d Ricky replied proudly. \u201cI\u2019m a Project Manager now. And yours looks amazing too, Doctor.\u201d<\/p>\n

They laughed loudly, basking in their achievements.<\/p>\n

The brother who didn\u2019t fit in<\/p>\n

Then the eldest brother arrived.<\/p>\n

Kuya Carding didn\u2019t come in a car\u2014he arrived on an old farm tractor. He wore a faded shirt, a palm hat, and boots caked with mud.<\/p>\n

The brothers turned pale.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd more than that,\u201d the mayor continued,

Their mother stepped forward, tears in her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you remember the \u2018scholarships\u2019 that paid for your education?\u201d she asked.
\n\u201cThat money didn\u2019t come from the government. It came from your brother.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen your father died,\u201d she said softly,
\n\u201cCarding quit school to work the land. Every peso he earned went to your studies. He asked me to call it a scholarship so you wouldn\u2019t feel ashamed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything you\u2019re proud of,\u201d she finished,
\n\u201cwas built on the mud he walked through.\u201d<\/p>\n

The clause no one expected<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Then a lawyer, Atty. Valdez, arrived in a white Mercedes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI came just in time,\u201d he announced.
\n\u201cToday, we read the special clause in Don Teodoro Reyes\u2019s will.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s more?\u201d Ben asked nervously.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d the lawyer said.
\n\u201cDon Carding was only the trustee for ten years.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf arrogance and contempt were shown today,\u201d he continued,
\n\u201cthe remaining inheritance would be donated to charity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe true test,\u201d he concluded,
