I was 33 years old, pregnant with my fourth child, and living in my in-laws\u2019 house when Eleanor\u2014my husband\u2019s mother\u2014looked me straight in the eye and said, loud and unapologetic:

My husband, Ryan, only smirked and followed it with, \u201cSo\u2026 when are you planning to leave?\u201d<\/p>\n

\nThe reality was different. Ryan enjoyed being the pampered son again. His mother cooked every meal. His father covered most of the expenses. And I was the unpaid, live-in caretaker who didn\u2019t truly belong anywhere in that house.<\/p>\n

We already had three daughters\u2014Ava, eight years old; Noelle, five; and Piper, three.

The threat stopped being theoretical one morning in the kitchen.<\/strong><\/h1>\n
