\u201cIt was a heart attack, Pare. It happened so suddenly,\u201d Sarah\u2019s brother Eric said, his voice shaky\u2014though it sounded rehearsed. \u201cThere was nothing we could do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Victor felt his world collapse. He had risked his life serving others, only to come home to this?<\/p>\n

Beside the coffin stood Tagpi, their loyal Golden Retriever. The dog was restless, barking nonstop and scratching at the wood.<\/p>\n

\u201cShut that dog up!\u201d Eric snapped, even kicking Tagpi. \u201cShow some respect!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t touch him,\u201d Victor warned, stepping between them. He knelt beside the dog. \u201cWhat is it, boy? Do you miss Mommy?\u201d<\/p>\n

But Tagpi wouldn\u2019t calm down. He barked again, staring straight at Victor, then nudged the coffin and tugged at Victor\u2019s pant leg insistently.<\/p>\n

A chill ran through Victor. Years as a soldier had trained him to sense when something wasn\u2019t right. And he trusted this dog.<\/p>\n

He stood up slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cOpen the coffin,\u201d Victor ordered.<\/p>\n

Eric\u2019s face went pale. \u201cW-Why? She\u2019s already prepared. The doctor said it shouldn\u2019t be opened\u2026 something about infection\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t care,\u201d Victor said, his tone firm, his hand resting near his holster. \u201cOpen it. Now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Intimidated, the funeral staff obeyed.<\/p>\n

Victor looked down at Sarah. She was pale\u2014but something felt off.<\/p>\n

Tagpi barked sharply again.<\/p>\n

Victor took Sarah\u2019s hand. It wasn\u2019t ice-cold. There was still warmth.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

He leaned closer, holding his breath.<\/p>\n

Then he heard it.<\/p>\n

A faint, fragile breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s alive!\u201d Victor shouted. \u201cCall an ambulance!\u201d<\/p>\n

Panic erupted. Eric tried slipping away, but Victor grabbed him with an iron grip.<\/p>\n

\u201cN-No! I was just getting help!\u201d<\/p>\n

Paramedics arrived and examined Sarah quickly.<\/p>\n

\u201cSir, she\u2019s alive,\u201d one medic confirmed. \u201cShe appears to be in a drug-induced coma. An overdose of sedatives. If she had been buried, she would have suffocated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Victor turned to Eric, fury blazing in his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n

Eric collapsed to his knees. \u201cI\u2019m sorry! I have gambling debts! I needed the insurance money before you came back. I thought\u2026 I thought she wouldn\u2019t wake up!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were going to bury your own sister alive for money?\u201d Victor said in disbelief.<\/p>\n

Overcome with rage, Victor struck him. Eric fell unconscious.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Sarah was rushed to the hospital. After several days of treatment, she finally opened her eyes.<\/p>\n

The first thing she saw was Victor holding her hand\u2014and Tagpi resting faithfully beside the bed.<\/p>\n

\u201cVictor\u2026\u201d she whispered weakly. \u201cThe last thing I remember\u2026 Kuya Eric gave me juice\u2026 then everything went black.\u201d<\/p>\n

Victor embraced her carefully. \u201cYou\u2019re safe now. Tagpi saved you. If not for him\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Eric was arrested and charged with attempted parricide. He would spend years paying for his crime.<\/p>\n
