Behind her, chaos unfolded as usual. One kid couldn\u2019t find a shoe. Another was complaining about math homework. The baby was banging a spoon against the high chair tray.<\/p>\n

Our life. Loud. Ordinary. Full.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re having a ten-year reunion next month,\u201d she said lightly. \u201cI was thinking about going.\u201d<\/p>\n

I let out a short laugh.<\/p>\n

Maria told us what happened. Being a mom IS something to be proud of. You\u2019re raising three human beings\u2014that\u2019s harder than any title we have.<\/p>\n

Come next time. We\u2019ll save you a seat.\u201d<\/p>\n

My chest tightened.<\/p>\n

Maria.<\/p>\n

Her best friend from high school. The one who became a surgeon. The one I had casually pointed to as an example of \u201creal success\u201d without thinking.<\/p>\n

I sat there staring at that photo.<\/p>\n

I thought about Anna at twenty-two, pregnant with our first child while her friends were packing for internships and grad school. I thought about the nights she paced the living room with colicky babies while I slept because I \u201chad meetings in the morning.\u201d I thought about birthday parties she planned down to the smallest detail. The lunches she packed. The doctor appointments she remembered. The tiny sneakers she lined up by the door every night.<\/p>\n

I thought about how easily I had reduced all of that to one word: just.<\/p>\n

Anna came downstairs and stopped when she saw me at the table, the frame propped up in front of me.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t forget me,\u201d she murmured. \u201cI thought maybe they had.\u201d<\/p>\n

Something inside me cracked open.<\/h1>\n

\u201cI forgot you,\u201d I said quietly.<\/p>\n

She looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot you physically,\u201d I added. \u201cBut who you are. What you carry. What you give every single day. I got distracted by titles and salaries and forgot that our entire world functions because of you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her eyes shimmered, but she didn\u2019t cry.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t need them to validate me,\u201d she said softly. \u201cI just needed you not to make me feel small.\u201d<\/p>\n

That hurt more than anything.<\/p>\n

\u201cI won\u2019t,\u201d I said. \u201cI promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

She gave a small nod.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t forgiveness yet.<\/p>\n

But it was a step.<\/p>\n

The photo hangs in our hallway now.<\/p>\n

Not as a symbol of something she missed\u2014but as a reminder of who she\u2019s always been.<\/p>\n
