But every evening, after kissing her goodnight and waiting for her to fall asleep, Daniel would quietly slip out of bed. At first, Emily assumed he was checking the doors. Then she began hearing a key turning somewhere down the hallway.<\/p>\n

Daniel\u2019s mother, Margaret Bennett, lived in the back bedroom \u2014 the one with heavy curtains and a large cedar armoire. She welcomed Emily with polite smiles and careful, assessing eyes. By day, Margaret appeared fragile, leaning on her cane. Yet at dinner, she asked sharp, probing questions about Emily\u2019s finances and future plans.<\/p>\n

One night, Emily followed Daniel. Through the keyhole, she saw Margaret sitting upright and fully alert \u2014 nothing like the frail woman she pretended to be.
