At the end of May, after a violent night of thunder and rain, he set out to inspect a remote stretch of land.<\/p>\n

Temperatures plunged nearly thirty below.<\/p>\n

Wind battered the hut as if trying to pry it apart, log by log.<\/p>\n

He told himself it was just a cold.<\/p>\n

A fever.<\/p>\n

But his strength drained day by day.<\/p>\n

The bucket water froze solid.<\/p>\n

Firewood dwindled faster than he had calculated.<\/p>\n
