I get calls at all hours.<\/p>\n

For some reason, people think that if you\u2019re a veterinarian, you\u2019re also responsible for insomnia, heartbreak, and existential crises\u2014especially at two in the morning, when a cat is lying on your chest and you\u2019re barely conscious.<\/p>\n

But Carmen\u2019s call came in the middle of the day.<\/p>\n

Still, there was something nocturnal in her voice. A fatigue that didn\u2019t belong to the hour.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood morning, is this Pedro\u2019s clinic?\u201d she asked cautiously.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. Pedro speaking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy name is Carmen. I have an appointment today. I have a problem with my cat. He won\u2019t let me sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n

That phrase\u2014won\u2019t let me sleep<\/em>\u2014can mean anything.<\/p>\n

Fleas. Anxiety. Jealousy.<\/p>\n

Or something much stranger.<\/p>\n

\n

THE \u201cNURSE\u201d NAMED MARCOS<\/h2>\n

Carmen arrived like someone entering a church\u2014quiet, almost apologetic.<\/p>\n

Early fifties. Carefully styled hair. A coat meant for being seen, not errands. A handbag that looked like it carried her entire life.<\/p>\n

She placed the carrier gently on the exam table.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is Marcos,\u201d she said. \u201cAlthough at night, he\u2019s less of a gentleman and more of a nurse on duty.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two enormous yellow eyes stared at me from inside. A large gray cat, dignified and unimpressed.<\/p>\n

I opened the carrier. Marcos stepped out slowly, assessed me, decided I wasn\u2019t a threat, and turned away with quiet authority.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll right,\u201d I said. \u201cTell me about this nurse.\u201d<\/p>\n

EVERY NIGHT AT THREE<\/h2>\n

\u201cHe wakes me up,\u201d Carmen sighed. \u201cEvery night. Around three or four.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAt first he taps my face. If I don\u2019t react, he hits harder. He bites, pulls the blanket, runs over me. He doesn\u2019t stop until I get up and go sleep on the sofa.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon as I leave, he lies on my pillow and sleeps peacefully until morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

I raised an eyebrow. \u201cDo you like the sofa?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI hate it,\u201d she snapped. \u201cHe used to sleep there when my husband snored. Now my husband is gone, and the cat has taken his place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marcos pretended none of this concerned him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow long has this been happening?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThree months. I thought it was spring. Then heat. Now it\u2019s autumn and it hasn\u2019t stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n

She hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have high blood pressure, Pedro. I\u2019m on medication. I need sleep. I\u2019ve started getting angry at him. I even locked him in the kitchen once. He screamed so loudly the neighbors hit the wall.\u201d<\/p>\n

That sentence\u2014I\u2019ve started getting angry at him<\/em>\u2014is where many cats end up abandoned.<\/p>\n

But Marcos didn\u2019t look aggressive.<\/p>\n

He looked\u2026 attentive.<\/p>\n

Not at me.<\/p>\n

At her.<\/p>\n

\n

SOMETHING IS WRONG \u2014 BUT NOT WITH THE CAT<\/h2>\n

I examined him thoroughly.<\/p>\n

Healthy coat. Stable heart rhythm. Calm breathing. No signs of neurological issues.<\/p>\n

But when Carmen shifted in her chair, Marcos\u2019 ears flicked instantly. His gaze locked onto her face.<\/p>\n

Concern.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes he wake you at the same time every night?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. Almost always between three and four.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd before that, do you sleep deeply?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI take my pill at eleven and I sink into something heavy. Then he pulls me out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow do you feel when you wake?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTerrible. Head heavy. Heart racing. Dry mouth. Sometimes I can\u2019t breathe well. I put a pill under my tongue and go to the sofa. After twenty minutes it passes.\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t like that description.<\/p>\n

Racing heart. Breathlessness. Same hour every night.<\/p>\n

I leaned back.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m afraid the main patient here isn\u2019t the cat.\u201d<\/p>\n

She blinked. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMarcos is fine. What\u2019s not fine is what\u2019s happening to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

She stared at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think he\u2019s waking me because something is wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he may be reacting to changes in your breathing or heart rhythm. He doesn\u2019t know medical terms. He only knows you\u2019re not okay.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo\u2026 he\u2019s saving me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t prove it,\u201d I said carefully. \u201cBut the pattern is too consistent. You need tests. Cardiac. Respiratory. Don\u2019t mention nerves. Say clearly: \u2018My cat wakes me every night and I feel unwell.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

She sat very still.<\/p>\n

Then she nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll right. I\u2019ll go.\u201d<\/p>\n

THE CALL THREE WEEKS LATER<\/h2>\n

I had almost forgotten about them when the phone rang.<\/p>\n

\u201cPedro? It\u2019s Carmen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her voice was different.<\/p>\n

Stronger.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou went to the doctor,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. I insisted. I told him exactly what you said.\u201d<\/p>\n

She paused.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have severe sleep apnea. And cardiac episodes during the night. The doctor was blunt\u2014if I had waited longer, it could have ended very badly.\u201d<\/p>\n

I closed my eyes for a second.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd now?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a CPAP machine. The first nights were strange. Marcos kept staring at the mask and the tubes. But he didn\u2019t wake me up. He just stayed beside me.\u201d<\/p>\n

She laughed softly.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd now he sleeps next to my face again. Like before. It\u2019s as if he was waiting until it was safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was the word that stayed with me.<\/p>\n

Safe.<\/em><\/p>\n

A DIFFERENT KIND OF GUARDIAN<\/h2>\n

A week later, they came back for Marcos\u2019 routine check-up.<\/p>\n

He jumped onto the exam table confidently, surveyed the room, and settled.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe hasn\u2019t hit me once,\u201d Carmen said. \u201cNot once.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe doesn\u2019t need to anymore,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n

She looked at him with a softness that hadn\u2019t been there before.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe doctor said many people live with sleep apnea for years without knowing it,\u201d she whispered. \u201cSometimes they just\u2026 don\u2019t wake up.\u201d<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t finish the sentence.<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t have to.<\/p>\n

Marcos hopped down and walked toward the door, impatient as if his shift had ended.<\/p>\n

When they left, I thought about how animals have no medical degrees, no vocabulary for diagnoses, no explanations.<\/p>\n

But they notice patterns.<\/p>\n

They feel irregular rhythms.<\/p>\n

They react to danger before we name it.<\/p>\n
