Then soft laughter rippled through the nearby tables. A few people smiled at the child\u2019s sincerity.<\/p>\n
But not everyone was amused.<\/p>\n
From a nearby table, a woman shook her head and muttered loudly enough for others to hear.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s what\u2019s wrong with this country,\u201d she said.
\u201cKids today don\u2019t even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream? Why, I never!\u201d<\/p>\n

Just then, an elderly gentleman from another table slowly walked over.<\/p>\n
He leaned down, gave my grandson a friendly wink, and said warmly, \u201cYou know something? I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer.\u201d<\/p>\n
My grandson looked up, surprised.
\u201cReally?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cCross my heart,\u201d the old man replied with a smile.<\/p>\n
Then he leaned closer and added in a playful whisper, nodding toward the woman who had complained:<\/p>\n
\u201cToo bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n
