Sarah stood off to the side, holding her belly. Her face was pale, her eyes wide with fear. She wasn\u2019t crying, but her expression said everything\u2014she still couldn\u2019t believe it had really happened.<\/p>\n

And in the center of the room stood Rex.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

That night, the wind slammed against the windows, the rain pouring without pause. I could hear him scratching at the door. That sound used to feel normal\u2014even comforting. Now it only irritated me.<\/p>\n

One day passed. Then another.<\/p>\n

Something moved inside the wall. It was a snake.<\/p>\n

Dark, thick, coiled up inside the hollow space behind the closet. And next to it\u2026 I saw a nest of eggs. Several of them, carefully hidden in the warmth.<\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t strike immediately. It simply lifted its head and looked at me. And in that moment, I understood everything.<\/p>\n

Rex had sensed it. From the very beginning. He hadn\u2019t gone crazy. He hadn\u2019t attacked. He had been trying to get to it, to destroy the nest, to protect us.<\/p>\n

He tore apart the clothes not because he lost control, but because he was trying to save us.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

And I\u2026 I had thrown him out. I had punished him for doing the right thing.<\/p>\n
