However, the man sitting next to her, Franklin Delaney, frowned. \u201cI don\u2019t want to sit next to that woman!\u201d he nearly shouted at the flight attendant.<\/p>\n

\u201cSir, this is her assigned seat. We can\u2019t change that,\u201d the stewardess replied gently.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s impossible. These seats cost a lot. She couldn\u2019t afford one\u2014just look at her clothes!\u201d Franklin insisted.<\/p>\n

Stella lowered her gaze, feeling embarrassed. She had put on her best outfit, even if it wasn\u2019t elegant. Some passengers sided with Franklin and suggested she move. Feeling small, Stella said quietly, \u201cMiss, it\u2019s okay. If there\u2019s a seat in economy, I\u2019ll take it. I used all my savings for this seat, but I don\u2019t want to inconvenience anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the stewardess shook her head. \u201cNo, ma\u2019am. You paid for this seat, and you have every right to be here, no matter what others say.\u201d<\/p>\n

At last, Franklin stopped arguing, and Stella remained in her seat.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

After takeoff, Stella accidentally dropped her purse in fear. Franklin helped gather her belongings, and a ruby locket slipped out. He let out a whistle. \u201cWow, that\u2019s impressive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d Stella asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m an antique jeweler. This locket is extremely valuable. Those rubies are real. Am I right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not sure. My father gave it to my mother many years ago. She passed it on to me after he never came home,\u201d Stella replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d Franklin asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry. My name is Franklin Delaney. I want to apologize for how I behaved earlier. I\u2019ve been dealing with some personal issues, but that\u2019s no excuse. May I ask what happened to your father?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy father was a fighter pilot in World War II. When America entered the war, he left but gave this locket to my mother, promising he would return. They loved each other deeply. I was only four, but I still remember that day. He never came back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s awful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is. War is pointless. Nothing good comes from it. My mother never truly recovered from losing him. We faced financial struggles, but she refused to sell the locket. When I was ten, she gave it to me and told me to keep it. I never sold it either, even during difficult times. Its real value lies in the memories it holds.\u201d<\/p>\n

She opened the locket and revealed two photographs. \u201cThese are my parents. You can see how much they loved each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Franklin nodded and pointed to another picture. \u201cIs that your grandchild?\u201d<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\u201cNo, that\u2019s my son \u2014 and he\u2019s actually the reason I\u2019m on this flight,\u201d Stella said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re going to visit him?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, this is the only way I can be near him,\u201d she answered. \u201cRemember when I mentioned my financial struggles? When I was in my 30s, I became pregnant. My boyfriend left, and I had no one to support me. My mother had already passed away from dementia. I loved my baby, but I couldn\u2019t give him a proper life, so I placed him for adoption.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you find each other later?\u201d Franklin asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI tried. I found him through a DNA website. A neighbor\u2019s child helped me send him an email. His name is Josh. He replied once, saying he was fine and didn\u2019t need me. I sent several more emails asking for forgiveness, but he never responded again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen why are you on this flight if he doesn\u2019t want to see you?\u201d<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\u201cBecause he\u2019s the pilot. Today is his birthday \u2014 January 22, 1973. I\u2019m getting older, and I don\u2019t know how much time I have left. I just wanted to be close to him on at least one of his birthdays. This is the only way I can.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later, as the plane prepared to land in New York, the pilot spoke over the intercom:
