A few hours after our wedding, my husband threw a dirty kitchen rag in my face in front of his entire family and calmly ordered me to get on my knees and clean up the mess his mother had just made.

A few hours after our wedding, my husband threw a dirty kitchen rag in my face in front of his entire family and calmly ordered me to get on my knees and clean up what his mother had just spilled. He was convinced that now that we were married, I wouldn’t go anywhere and would quickly get used to the new “house rules.” But he could never have imagined what I would do just minutes later.

The morning after our wedding was supposed to be peaceful. At least, that was how I had imagined it.

The night before, Mark and I had spent nearly until midnight accepting congratulations, taking pictures, dancing, and listening to endless toasts from relatives. The following day, his family decided to host a large late breakfast at my mother-in-law’s house.

More than twenty people sat around the long dining table. Guests discussed the wedding photos, some laughed about the games from the previous night, and my mother-in-law kept moving between the kitchen and dining room, constantly watching me.

Even before the wedding, she had made several strange remarks.

“In our family, women know their place.”

At the time, I dismissed them as poorly chosen jokes.

Mark always laughed and said his mother was simply old-fashioned. I believed him.

As I walked past the table, my mother-in-law suddenly knocked a large bowl of greasy meat sauce with her elbow. Some of it spilled directly onto the floor, splattering the hem of my light-colored dress.

“Well, well,” she said, barely hiding her smile. “Look at the mess you’ve made.”

I stared at her in surprise.

“But you’re the one who knocked over the bowl.”

The room immediately grew noticeably quieter. My mother-in-law slowly turned toward her son.

Mark put down his fork, stood up from the table, and walked over to the kitchen counter. I assumed he was going to get some napkins.

Instead, my husband picked up an old kitchen rag covered in dark stains from grease and food.

He approached me and unexpectedly threw it straight into my face. The cloth struck my cheek and fell onto my shoulder.

Several relatives looked away, but no one said a word.

Mark stared at me with complete calm.

    “Pick it up.”

I slowly removed the rag from my shoulder.

    “What?”

“You heard me. Get on your knees and wipe the floor.”

Someone at the table let out a nervous chuckle.

    Mark took another step closer.

“You’d better get used to it right away. You’re a wife now, not a guest. Nobody here is going to clean up after you.”

My mother-in-law stood beside the table, watching everything unfold with satisfaction.

It was at that exact moment that I finally realized the whole thing had been planned in advance. They probably expected me to burst into tears, start arguing, or try to defend myself.

But none of them could have imagined what I was about to do—or the harsh lesson I was going to teach them.

    I simply looked at Mark.

The man standing in front of me was nothing like the man I had dated for almost two years. Just yesterday, he had held my hand in front of our guests, promised to protect me, and called me the most precious person in his life.

Now he was clearly enjoying the fact that twenty-two relatives were watching him publicly put his new wife “in her place.”

    Unexpectedly, I smiled. Mark frowned.

    “What’s so funny?”

“Nothing. I’m just going upstairs to change my dress first. It’s completely stained.”

    My mother-in-law immediately nodded.

“Go ahead. Then come back and clean everything up.”

Mark even stepped aside to let me pass. That was probably why neither of them suspected anything. I calmly walked upstairs, entered the bedroom, and closed the door.

The bed was still covered with boxes and envelopes we had received as wedding gifts. We hadn’t even opened some of them yet.

I took a travel bag out of the closet. First, I packed my passport, bank cards, and documents.

Then I gathered all the wedding gifts that had been given to us: envelopes from my relatives, jewelry, a box of money from my parents, and several expensive items.

Ten minutes later, the bag was almost full.

    Mark’s voice came from downstairs.

“Did you fall asleep up there?”

    I opened the bedroom window.

Below it was the small roof of an extension, and nearby was an outdoor staircase that workers had used during renovations.

Getting down was much easier than I had expected. Within minutes, I was walking along a nearby street, calling a taxi.

My phone started ringing almost immediately. First Mark. Then my mother-in-law. Then Mark again. I didn’t answer a single call.

That same day, I went to a friend’s house, and the next morning, I contacted a lawyer and filed for divorce.

Later, Mark sent me a long message.

He claimed it had all been nothing more than a family joke and that I had overreacted.

But after that morning, no one could ever convince me that throwing a dirty rag in your wife’s face and forcing her to get on her knees was some kind of joke.
