An Unexpected Announcement
At seventy, my father-in-law’s hair was almost completely gray, his back slightly bent, yet he still dressed sharply and sprayed on expensive cologne as though he were decades younger. At an age when most men enjoyed quiet evenings with their grandchildren, he stunned the entire family with his demand — he wanted to marry the 25-year-old tutor who had been teaching his grandson.
We all tried to reason with him, but he only repeated:
— “Love is love, there is no age here.”
When we protested harder, he even threatened to sell his land and divide the inheritance if anyone dared to stand in his way.
A Wedding Against Our Will
In the end, my husband and I had no choice but to organize a grand wedding, inviting the entire small town near Guadalajara. We carried the weight of embarrassment, but there was no turning back.
On the big day, the bride looked stunning — perfect makeup, bouquet in hand — though she kept glancing nervously at her phone. My father-in-law, on the other hand, couldn’t stop smiling.
— “Today is the happiest day of my life!” he declared with joy.
The Strange Silence of the Night
That night, we stayed in the living room, giving them privacy. Around 10 p.m., the whole house grew quiet — until we suddenly heard strange sounds, “ugh… ugh…” that lasted about three minutes and then stopped.
I worried he might be unwell, so I got up to make ginger tea. But just seconds later, a sharp cry echoed through the hallway:
— “Oh my God! Son, come here quickly!”
What We Saw in the Bedroom
We rushed into the bedroom, and what we saw left us speechless. The bed was a mess, sheets tossed aside, the bride’s gown and undergarments scattered across the floor. Next to the bed, a young man with no clothes was trying desperately to hide half his body under it.
The bride, pale as a ghost, clutched an envelope filled with wedding money.
My father-in-law sat on the floor, trembling, pointing toward the man, his words broken and heavy:
— “He… he’s her ex… she told me to go to bed early because she had to meet him this afternoon… God…”
The Collapse of a Celebration
The room was filled with a painful silence. The young man hid, shaking, too afraid to raise his head. The bride — no longer a wife — fell to her knees and muttered:
— “I’m sorry… I just…”
My father-in-law’s face looked hollow, more wounded than angry.
My husband froze for a moment, then grabbed the man by the collar and dragged him out.
— “Leave. Now,” he said firmly.
The man quickly dressed and ran, not daring to look back.
The bride tried to walk away with the envelopes of money, but I blocked the door and pulled them from her hands.
— “This belongs to our family. You have no right,” I said coldly.
Whispers of the Neighbors
Within minutes, the yard filled with curious neighbors whispering among themselves:
— “I knew this wedding was strange…”
— “Poor man, at his age…”
My father-in-law stumbled back into his room and locked the door. The sound of the bolt sliding shut was colder than the night air.
We picked up the clothes and sheets, stuffed them into a bag, and left it at the entryway.
The young woman — already an “ex-wife” within a single day — stood trembling, eyes vacant. Before leaving, she whispered:
— “I… I didn’t want this either… but…”
No one cared to hear more.
A Man Forever Changed
The door closed behind her, leaving behind a wedding night turned into a nightmare, and a family’s honor exposed before the entire town.
From that day on, my father-in-law never wore cologne again. His fine suits stayed in the closet.
Now, each evening, he sits quietly on the porch, staring at the horizon — as if he had aged ten years in one single night.
