At my brother’s fitting, he laughed and told his groomsmen I lived off our parents because I couldn’t hold a job. I said nothing and kept my sleeves down. Then his best man, a Ranger, spotted the scar on my wrist. He went pale, made one silent phone call, and twenty minutes later, someone walked through the door.

Neckline wrinkles: 5 tips to prevent and eliminate them

Day creams, night creams, masks, and hyaluronic acid treatments: we constantly try to ensure our facial skin is well cared for every day.

However, we often forget about the neck and décolletage. And because of this, many fine lines appear in the chest area over time. We show you 5 tricks on how to prevent décolletage wrinkles or get rid of them.

Causes of Décolletage and Chest Wrinkles

As with wrinkles around the eyes, mouth, and forehead, aging is the main reason for the appearance of fine lines and looser skin on the neck, chest, and décolletage (upper torso).

With each birthday, the collagen in our skin, which provides structure, breaks down a little more. The result: the skin becomes thinner, less elastic, and drier, a combination that makes it appear less firm, sagging, and wrinkled. However, there are other culprits that could be the reason why wrinkles appear on your décolletage and chest.

    1. Sun Damage

Exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun (think of how shirts, dresses, and swimsuits leave these exact areas exposed) accelerates the natural aging process, breaks down the skin’s collagen and elastin—the connective tissue that keeps it youthful and firm—and causes the skin to lose its strength and flexibility. When this happens, the skin begins to sag and wrinkle.

    2. A Neglected Body Area

When you wash and moisturize your face in the morning and before bed every night, you may not always include your neck, chest, and décolletage in the process. By neglecting to cleanse, moisturize, and nourish these areas—as well as your cheeks, forehead, chin, nose, etc.—the negative effects accumulate over time.

    3. Being a Side Sleeper

You may have heard that sleeping on your side (which causes your face and neck to be pressed into the pillow) can contribute to facial wrinkles. That’s true, but it can also promote fine lines elsewhere: sleeping on your side or curled up in the fetal position encourages compression of the chest skin, which can cause wrinkles between and just above the breasts.

    4. Restrictive Clothing

Sports bras, swimsuits, and tank tops and tight-fitting tops can push the breasts together, compressing the surrounding skin. While you may feel supported during a workout or at the beach, keep in mind that when worn for hours, overly tight clothing can contribute to wrinkles.

    5. Smoking Wrinkles the Décolletage and Other Areas

Smoking won’t just cause fine lines and wrinkles on your face; the same can also occur on your neck and chest. This is because nicotine causes the blood vessels in the outermost layers of the skin to constrict, impairing blood flow and depriving the skin of important oxygen and nutrients.

How to Prevent Wrinkles on the Neckline or Chest

Whether the changes in your skin are normal signs of aging or due to one of the other reasons mentioned above, you can take steps to improve the appearance of your neck, chest, and décolletage.

    1. Cleansing is the most important thing

For many women, removing makeup is as essential to their nightly routine as brushing their teeth every day. However, it’s crucial to remove more than just makeup residue from your face to prevent blemishes and wrinkles.

After all, we sweat throughout the day, which ensures that foundation will penetrate deeper into our skin. It’s best to use a gentle lotion for daily cleansing. Regular but gentle exfoliation is also recommended to remove old skin cells.

    2. Moisturize your décolletage

If you cleanse your skin frequently, you know that it’s important to provide it with sufficient moisture. Just like on your face, dryness is often a reason for the appearance of wrinkles.

The best thing you can do when applying your day and night creams is not only to your face, but also to your neck and décolletage. Additionally, you can also use special décolletage masks from time to time to give your skin a boost of moisture in that area.

    3. Always use a product with SPF

Like facial skin, the skin on your décolletage is much more susceptible to the sun’s rays than other areas. Therefore, you should not only pay attention to using products with SPF during the summer, but also ensure sufficient sun protection in the colder months.

4 Support tissue health with regular exercise

In addition to creams, performing various fitness exercises can also help prevent wrinkles on the décolletage. In addition to push-ups, butterfly stretches can also be included.

If you’re not motivated to start exercising or have only recently started, you can also use a simple trick to firm the skin on your décolletage. Simply press both palms together at chest level and hold this position for several seconds. It’s best to repeat this exercise 4-5 times and do it daily.

5 Pay attention to your sleeping position

The correct sleeping position also plays an important role in the development of wrinkles on the décolletage. When you sleep on your side, gravity acts on your skin. This makes deep lines become visible more quickly.

Therefore, it’s best to sleep on your back. If this position is uncomfortable for you, using a special pillow can help prevent wrinkles on your décolletage.
