During her first meeting with her foreign daughter-in-law, the Turkish mother-in-law began insulting her in Turkish and demanding that her son leave her. She never imagined what the young woman would do in response.

When Elya met Emir, she immediately understood that his parents might not accept her. They were from Turkey, lived in a small town, and deeply respected traditional family values. Elya had grown up in another country, spoke a different language, and was nothing like the kind of girls Emir’s relatives had always imagined him being with.

At first, Emir assured her that everything would be fine.

“My mother is just strict, but she’ll get used to you,” he said.

Elya wanted to believe him. She truly loved Emir and understood that meeting his family was an important step. But even during their video calls, she could feel the coldness coming from his mother.

Emir’s mother was named Leyla Hanım. She almost never smiled at Elya. When Emir said something funny, Leyla Hanım might smile at her son, but the moment the camera turned toward Elya, her expression immediately became serious.

She asked Elya questions in English, but each one sounded less like ordinary curiosity and more like a test.

“What do your parents do for work?”

“Are you sure you can live far away from your family?”

    “Can you cook Turkish food?”

“And how many languages do you speak?”

Elya answered calmly and tried not to show that the questions made her uncomfortable. She had a job, earned her own money, and had never asked Emir for gifts. But Leyla Hanım seemed determined to find faults in her.

Sometimes she would look at her son and speak to him in Turkish. Elya did not understand the words, but she understood the tone perfectly. After those conversations, Emir would become awkward and quickly change the subject.

A few months later, he invited Elya to Turkey so she could finally meet his parents in person.

She spent a long time choosing a gift for Leyla Hanım. She bought a beautiful bouquet of pale flowers, brought sweets for the family, and wore a delicate dress with a small floral pattern. Elya wanted to show that she respected his home and had come with good intentions.

But everything started going wrong the moment she reached the door.

When Elya tried to hug her future mother-in-law, the woman unexpectedly stepped aside. She only gave a stiff nod and said:

    “Welcome.”

Elya handed her the bouquet. Leyla Hanım took it with two fingers, looked at the flowers, and placed them on a small table in the hallway. She did not even put them in a vase.

    Emir noticed, but said nothing.

There was plenty of food on the table. Leyla Hanım had prepared dolma, rice, meat, flatbread, salads, and several dishes with tomatoes. Elya had already mentioned during a video call that she had a severe tomato allergy. Emir knew about it too.

But there was almost nothing on the table that she could safely eat.

“I thought you just didn’t like tomatoes,” Leyla Hanım said indifferently in English. “You can eat bread.”

Elya silently took a piece of bread and smiled, even though she felt deeply hurt inside.

At first, the conversation was ordinary. They talked about the journey, Elya’s work, the weather, and life in her country. Leyla Hanım gave short answers, then suddenly turned to her son and began speaking sharply to him in Turkish.

Elya sat across from them and watched closely.

“Son, leave this girl. She’s only with you because of your money. I’ve already found a respectable girl for you from a good family. This foreigner came here just for fun. She’s arrogant, greedy, and not even pretty. Leave her, or you can forget that you have a mother.”

Emir let out a heavy sigh.

“Mom, calm down. I’m not planning to marry her yet. Don’t make a scene.”

He did not defend Elya. He did not say his mother was wrong. He did not stop her.

Elya slowly looked at Emir, then at Leyla Hanım. She looked confused, as if she were trying to understand why they had suddenly switched to Turkish.

Leyla Hanım was certain the girl could not understand a single word. She even smirked and continued saying something to her son.

Then Elya calmly placed her napkin on the table.

And then she unexpectedly did something that left everyone frozen in sh0ck.

Then she began speaking in flawless Turkish.

“Leyla Hanım, you’re mistaken. I understood every single thing you just said.”

The woman’s face changed instantly. The spoon slipped from her hand and landed softly against the plate.

    Emir turned pale.

“I didn’t come here for money,” Elya continued. “And I will never allow anyone to judge me simply because I was born in another country. I respected you, your home, and your family. But respect has to go both ways.”

    She looked at Emir.

“And you should have defended me instead of trying to calm down the person who was humiliating me.”

Then Elya stood up from the table.

“I won’t stay in a house where I’m considered an outsider and unworthy,” she said. “And I won’t stay with a man who remains silent while I’m being insulted.”

She picked up her bag and walked out.

Leyla Hanım remained sitting there in silence.
